  • Heat sealer for mylar question

Im looking into buying a clamshell style heat sealer for my mylar bags. I have been using an iron and or a flat iron (hair straightener). The Iron works Great 80% of the time but still having to go back and reseal often. The flat iron more so. I found this product on amazon...

Anyone have experience with it? Good, bad, chinese junk? Just not sure I want to drop $100.00 blind on this. My other option was going to a vacuum sealer with more cost and just as limited use.
    Thanks for any help.

Don't know if it is the EXACT one, but we've been using models identical looking to that paying around $100. for them since the late 90's. They are durable and will hold up.

My guys at the shop "back in the day" used to drop the damn things on the floor after packing a run of buckets. If they landed right they survived, but usually it brought the heating element. So you can't drive nails with it, or let dunskies drop it on the concrete floor :) Other than that, they hold up well.

Set it to high and let it heat up for about 5 minutes before sealing.

I have been using one for years, works great. A vacuum sealer works great for food and ammo. You can get mylar bags from your state LDS bishops warehouse, (Mormon) The local will be on the net.

Looked on e net . Coffee pouch foil and mylar heat seal on net all sizes and colors. Also combo heat seal reseal zip lock. This would work great for ammo. AND FOOD.

Got the sealer and works as advertised. I was using an "OLD" regular Iron and it had burned out. Read a bunch of people were using flat irons (hair straighteners) and purchased one. All the bags I sealed with the flat iron opened up. Lost my O2 absorber's and time.
Thursday my 6" clam shell sealer arrived and I put it right to use resealing the opened bags, putting a new O2 absorber in first. I wont bore y'all with a ton a pics that you already have seen 100 times over.

That is 8 Lbs of red beans resealed on 5/19/2016 and holding longer then the flat iron seal ever did.

I learned talking with a friend that flat irons are not created equal and work at different temps, some work really really well and others are crap... like the one I had. I also learned I like the clam shell sealer better then either Iron. Its just plain easier to use/manipulate, not that the irons were hard its just more ergonomic??? at a loss for a word. I paid $88.00 from Amazon and free shipping. Buy once cry once and all that.

Calm shell makes it easier for sure.
