  • Barter Items

Just wondering if anyone is stocking up on a particular barter item and what that would be?

Tobacco, Alcohol, Spare water filters, .22 ammo, matches/lighters, Bibles, books/movies, diapers, etc.?

Just wondering what everyones thoughts are?

Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

Being a non-smoker, if someone wanted to store tobacco products for barter would it be better to buy cartons of cigs or the papers and tobacco seperately. Which will last the longest from a storage standpoint. It's not like the rice and beans I store as I'll never use the tobacco.

On the other hand, I heard that tobacco mixed with water can make a bug deterent for a garden. Maybe storing it in cans or pouches would be better? Any thoughts?

My thoughts and opinions on barter and trade

Never show more than necessary for a given trade. Never let on like you have more.
Only trade alcohol, weapons, and ammunition to those you know will not be a problem for you later.
Try to barter skills and knowledge rather than goods. They don’t run out.
Try to barter the information in books. Don’t let the books leave your control.
Try to barter the use of tools and equipment rather than trading them away.
Try to make trades in neutral areas or at a designated barter/trade meeting. Make sure you aren’t followed back home.
Not all the items/skills listed will be of much value early into the event. It could be three to five years or more for some of the items to become valuable.
Try to have most of your equipment and several months of consumables before you stockpile trade goods, including Precious Metals.
When it comes to PMs, unless you are wealthy, start slow. A few silver dimes & quarters at a time. When you feel it is time to get gold coins, stay with the small denominations. And remember that there will be some people that won’t trust or want them.

Some of what I'm acquiring for barter (No, I don’t have all of these items. Yet.)

+100 Jerry. Excellent list of things to barter, I guess I would sum it up with the things that we take for granted now especially those things that require processing by chemistry or mechanically.

Consider washable feminine hygene products. It's not as gross as it sounds, remember cloth diapers? Besides, what did our ancestors do before disposables were invented in the 50's? You can research them online at several sites. a couple are ruralreveloution.com for purchasing these items pre-made. and hillbillyhousewife.com for patterns to make them yourself. I am not affiliated with these sites only satisfied reader.

Its been said many times on many boards, but ammo or anything else that can be used against you shouldn't be included in barter items. If people are so desperate that they need ammo, then they need it to take what dosen't belong to them, if they were paying attention and prepped, then they prepped ammo right along with the other things.

IMO,ammo probably would be the LAST thing i would barter, reason being your own ammo u trade today might be used against you tomorrow.I think a great barter item would be to own a couple Big Berky water filters (ive owned one for quite sometime and am well pleased with it) and have some empty plastic gallon milk jugs to sell, trade filtered water for items u need..have them keep the jugs and when they come back to refill bring your own jug!!! remember when we were growing up and u bought a 6 pk of soda, either u brought your emptys to trade or pay a deposit, this would be a very valuable service/barter item to have. I will be prepared to do this myself..gonna buy lots pool shock,it should be coming on sale, along with canning supplies since its end of pool and canning season, keep your eye open at China-Mart for these end of season cleranced-out items

excellent points crossbow and bountyhunter - don't give away your ammo to a potential enemy.

Maybe if we think of the rule of 3's that would help to determine what items would be good to stock up for barter. Everyone needs to drink water, shelter, and eat. Keep it simple and stick to the basics. Lots of good ideas so far.
