Cleaning out some areas in an outbuilding that mold had become an issue in. Damn this stuff is bad.

Decided to completely gut the outbuilding, already pulled all the supplies out, going to pull all the wood shelves out also, add more ventilation and try to kill any remaining mold.

Have previously used "Jomax" and it didn't really impress me. A bleach/water solution has been somewhat effective in the past for knocking it back, but not eliminating it.

What about basements? We don't have any this far south, but is mold a PITA for basements? I would assume so. How do you deal with it when you lack good ventilation to an area?

I used a biocide product called Mold Bomb fogger Biocide is a co. on the net. It killed the mold and I have not seen it. BUT I did not remove the wall I painted over it with killz-it paint.(primer)

      Air flow...and moisture control.
Are key...if not..mold grows on anything porous.

Ever figure mold could grow inside a rubbermaid tote? Mind you I know it's not a truly "sealed" container, but I've never seen mold grow inside these before.

Also, this was one of the few times we put some wet packed stuff back for a specific purpose- look at how poorly the cans held up. These were the most current food product in this particular arena and it fared the worst with the humidity.

Standard dehydrated and FD #10 cans fared better than the commercial wet pack.

Best in this environment were MRE's and Mt. House in pouches inside the totes.

        Re: Mold-

It's interesting I was just saying to the family the other day- "why hasn't someone come up with a fogger type deal that gets into all the cracks and crevices for the mold?" Thanks cpt!

I'm still going to pull all the wood, up the ventilation then nuke it with the "mold bomb" product. May take a few months but I'll report back on how it goes :)

The white fuzzy junk is common. Pretty much untill we got issues under wraps here i was battling it. On everything from boots to even brandnew (never used in the outdoors) nylon to hats...books..etc.
Ive got some of the cough old gear stored in double trash bags in totes. Im sure its covered.
Even my guns had it on them(thats with damp rid bags even in the safes ).
What we did was buy a dehumidifier. It helped a ton.
The thing with mold/fungus is it needs air..moisture and a food source. The food is anything besides glass lol .
On your wood racks. Theres a solution of strong peroxide aka not store bought that will wipe it out once sprayed on. Just got to a beatuy supply shop. Ill try a recall if its high % mix or a bleach/perox mix. Itll turn "black" growth white in minutes.ill try and get with our mold remediator ive used for several years to double check.
No need to destroy/rip them out. Because honestly unless they humidty/moisture problems are solved its the same as a roof leak. You can repaint the cieling but each time it rains your repainting it.....gotta fix the leak first.

Like others have said, no miracle chemical, just pre-emptive DESIGN, that being AIR FLOW and humidity control. Without that, losing battle. In Southern States, mold is the demon spawn child of HUMIDITY. But us further up have humidity as well, it just seems easier to control due to the moderate temps and lower humidity in the air...

Everything wood is out of there. It is already much easier to breathe in there. Cleaned and will pressure wash also I think.

More ventilation to help with humidity issues, probably some backup drainage systems.
