"Just doing my research"- I can't tell you how many times a day we hear that phrase.

And TO AN EXTENT that's necessary, but I can't tell you how many times we talk to people 5, 10 or more times over the course of years even that are still "researching" things, relatively small purchases, etc.

    That's Analysis Paralysis.

The symptoms include too much time READING about something and not any or enough time DOING something.

It's the death knell of today's "prepper."

And it's not just about buying things. It comes into play with darn near anything that's done now a days.

"I'm researching whether or not multicam or ACU is better in my environment, such and such "expert" says multicam is better, but so and so says ACU is best, I'm so confused I'm doing another year of research on it...."

I got a crazy idea- why not just buy a used set of each and go out and TRY for yourself? Got kids? Take them out and let them play and watch them, who can you see better?

Damn, that's a simple solution..... Surely more RESEARCH needs to go into that.....

We have gotten so spoon fed, so dependent on others to THINK for us. Folks, we are in a bad spot.

Yes, if their is a seriously important subject that you need advice on, SEEK IT OUT BY ALL MEANS. Seek actual training in the subject, find what works FOR YOU (ding ding ding, MESSAGE!) and then ACT.

So many of us are missing the last part- ACTION.

Why? Cause the very act of the supposed "research" gives us the FEELING that we are actually DOING something when really we are sitting in park, rev'ing the engine but not putting the car into DRIVE in order to move forward.

So many people are stuck in "park" right now but the engine is rev'ing. Gas is being burned, it sounds cool, the person is behind the wheel turning it left and right....

BUT THEIR IS NO FORWARD MOVEMENT.

A huge thing, like perhaps your very survival will depend on it is this-

Learning to make a flipping decision quickly.

"Oh well wait I will do some research on whether or not I should activate my plans now"- YOUR DEAD, GAME OVER, SORRY YOU LOSE.

No "do overs", your dead. Cause of death- INDECISION.

What decisions have you been putting off? What ACTIONS have you been sitting in park rev'ing the engine over?

I think "analysis paralysis" goes hand in hand with Normalcy Bias. If someone "Acts" on there intuition and actually makes a purchase then this is really happening and they were just fine wearing a tin foil hat because they could take it off when they wanted to. The casual Prepper I can only assume is this way. Window shopping their way to the time of Tribulation. Here is a great article on dealing with the situation now. Corrie Ten Boom was a holocaust survivor that live thru tribulation so her words speak volumes to me.

If you are sitting on the fence on a purchase, pull the trigger. Having it and not needing it is a whole lot better than needing it and not having it.

Another reason for this is the lack of critical thinking training...in schools and by parents. Here's my process when I research/act on something (questions I ask myself).

      1) What's the price range of what I want to buy
      2) How much is my time worth in $
      3) How much $ do I have to spend on it/them
      4) Can I afford to 'buy it twice'....as in if I make a mistake how long will I have to save up to fix it.

The what's the price range/how much is my time worth/how many $ do I have to spend determine the length of time I allow myself for research.

I went through 4 or 5 cooking systems (back packing) before I settled on one (doesn't matter which, it works for me). I ended up with one of the lesser expensive ones (an alcohol burner)....

This decision making process works for me....not for everyone. I agree with ld3....I work in IT and see it often in the tech/business world. Our society has become so risk-adverse that people are scared to make a mistake. Prepping is a learning process...research, buy, try and evaluate...rinse and repeat as necessary.

The weapons deal would just make it easier on me...the gen could help us out a bunch being more rural on the grid....the mods would put money back in our pockets...

Heck...you saw my Ak buying adventure...but ive also plopped down $$$ on harder choices...i guess that my way of thinking.
Broken pipe 80psi out of a 3/4 pipe...i got this blindfolded....ask me which pack is better and be ready for four hours of me weighing the pros and cons of every stupid detail....only to buy a old alice pack in the end lol

Wife unit just flat out says " just buy it....in twenty minutes youll talk yourself outta it..."...

Yup...too many are so scared of making a mistake that they fail to do anything...other than become keyboard commandos...or worse yet, mall ninjas.

Bottom line is if you aren't out there doing something, you're only hurting yourself and your family.

It bugs me to read a post that is full of "it is going to have.." or "I will do [blah]" and you can tell that it is all smoke...nothing will ever come of the "big plans" because it's all talk.

And then there is the "I can't afford it" club. But they can afford to go to Disney or some other stupid place. Maybe move to a nicer apartment. Really? Time will be judge and jury on whether that was a good investment...I'll take bets on "no" ;)

For the majority id say the "no money " excuse is just that. For the minority its not. I kinda fall into the minority. But I also fall into that smaller group that actually moved away for the mcmansion dream and the race with the Jones.
I know tons who do make considerably more than myself.sure they will have the toys and gadgets but still live 4 minutesfrom the ghetto for the sake of convenience ...
            It is what it is.
One thing to remember is for many this is a "hobby "not a lifestyle ........
