  • Hash Browns dried

I have been eating Idahoian brand hash brown potatoes from Wally world. .98 bag serves 2. Really good, said real potatoes, (Dried) better then the old dehydrated type. The bag seems tough enough to hold up , they should store well. I have made scalloped potatoes , soup and fried them till brown, they actually brown up. Ask the manager for case lots. They sell out quick, from the USA. Put em in a sealed bucket.

Thanks for the tip Cap! We'll get some next week.

We've been buying the frozen ones and dehydrating them ourselves.

Had some long long ago when we used to eat that kinda stuff.
Werent bad....irrc i think sams used to sell large bags of them vs the box or extra large boxes of them.
Dried taters seemed all the rage few years back.....

I've had them and we like them. Only problem is I can't find them in my local Wal-mart any more. Not sure what is going there. Nor are they in my other local grocery store. I will check at Sam's next time I go.

I had to talk to store manager and threat to call corp. office. Then they ordered 100 for me. It is a direct from factory item for them and the lazy #$%^& do not want to work. But they did and I have my extra put away in food grade bucket's that I get free from a local winery. ^ gal/w lid. all I did was ask.

I did buy two boxes of these to take camping. Wanted to see if they would be any good and to see if my kids would it them. Well, sad to say I never got to try them. Though I think my dog really really liked them, she ate a box and a 1/2. Ill have to try them again. If I can remember to get them.

The Idahoan brand sounds interesting and similar to the Hungry Jack brand for ingredients. I'm going to keep on the lookout for the Idahoan brand to do a side by side comparison with the Hungry Jack brand (to see what the difference is).

It seems there is a six pack of the Idahoan brand in 2.125 lb boxes available at Amazon for a cheaper price per ounce than what walmart sells them for - (info at http://idahoan.com/hidden-product/ha...wns-club-pack/ and on amazon at http://www.amazon.com/Idahoan-Browns.../dp/B007TASFTC ). Amazon seems to be around 7 cents an ounce cheaper. The best price I found them for was at Sam's club, but they show as out of stock http://www.samsclub.com/sams/idahoan...prod3920068.ip (10 cents an ounce cheaper than Amazon, 17 cents an ounce cheaper than the packets at walmart - if I did my math correctly.)

Augason farms and honeyvile sells dried hash browns too. Augason seems to have more ingredients (preservatives?) and honeyville shows as out of stock. There is also an Idahoan Hearty cut hash browns that is in a club pack but seems to have a longer ingredient list too.

Something else noticed on Amazon is Golden Grill brand hash browns. http://www.amazon.com/Golden-Grill-H...dp/B00470NIOO/ and also http://www.amazon.com/GOLDEN-Premium...dp/B0051HHUL4/ - I don't know anything about that brand though - but it seems to have good reviews.

                    HI al
the golden grill is what the local café serves they are pretty good. I like the idea of the bigger box for long term, I buy onions that way. They will last for years if kept sealed. Only problem I see is co's are going to plastic or waxed cardboard?? don't know about the wax carton.

Maybe if they were put into small (like a 1 gallon size) mylar bag and sealed they would keep better than in the carton?

I just watched a youtube video of a lady (mormon) prepper showing how to store foods in mylar using a vacuum sealer.Mostly powdered foods like potato flakes, milk, cake mixes, etc. instead of emptying contents of box, she sealed box and all in mylar with oxygen asorber.

Has anyone done this and would it work? sorry for hijack sniper 69 got me to thinking about it.

Yes please think out of the box , no pun intended . That is what I want when I make these idea's. Like the hash browns. I had put up ammo for others in myler bags vacuum sealer , works great. but please remember you can make long term food storage from local sources. Just because it is a simple idea does not make it invalid.

My local Sam's did not have the hash browns only the potato flakes. Very disappointing. May see if a friend wants to go in halves on the ones from Amazon.

RobertJ - Just be careful about vacuum sealing powder items. They can get sucked into your sealer and ruin it.

Cheese hash brown casserole , water or some type of milk or both , powder or real cheese, flour a small amt. , onion , pack hash brn taters , little mustard, seasoning to taste, mix up all but taters in a tall glass shake well, taters in baking dish small, pour glass full over taters stir, add water etc if needed, to just cover taters , . Bake til bubling and thickens , top might brown up . Will feed 2-3 people. Taste great /easy to do.
