  • How does cereal store long term? Results

Back when we had the commercial cannery 1998-end of 1999, we had friends that we let come and custom pack specific items for themselves.

Usually this was a guy that wanted to pack some specialty item, usually some "normal" storage food.

One friend brought a boatload of junk food! Oreos, Captain Crunch cereal, etc. I told him "I don't know how long that crap will store but we will help you pack it."

He said years later that he had rotated most of it and none of it was bad.

I ate a lot differently than- as my waistline would testify- and I decided to put up some regular dry cereals that I ate back then.

So a couple cases of Raisin Bran, Grape Nuts and Cherrios were sealed in #10 cans packed for long term storage each with a D750 absorber.

I've rotated a lot of the grape nuts, and that was fine. The Raisin Bran was honestly the only one of the three that concerned me. The raisins were normal raisins, a far cry from the dehydrated raisins we were packing then in #10 cans for sale.

Last night I opened one of the Raisin Bran cans, most of these were packed in the summer of 1999, so they are 15 years old.

Ate a nice bowl of 15 year old Raisin bran last night. The only noticeable difference is it didn't taste as sweet as I remembered, but 15 years might have changed the taste buds a bit also. Flakes and raisins were of the same texture and feel as previous.

People ask on forums from time to time- "how does regular cereal store?" I'd say pretty darn well if it's packed correctly!

We just opened a 10 year old can of JRH Granola, go figure... Tasted fine, and the raisins were still edible. We are slowly rotating our storage, and so far we haven't had any suprises. The dried food takes a little longer than it did when "new", but the flavor remains.

We are working through a can of that granola also. That was actually a nice find. Only packed about 1,000 lbs. of that "back in the day"- so hang on to some of it, it may have collector's value one day LOL :)
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

Maybe you should auction one off!! It's amazing how long foods last when properly packed. I think we have been soo programed by the use by date thing that even at a subconscious level we think things won't last. A couple years ago I opened a bag of dry roasted peanuts from a MRE that was something like 10 years old and they tasted like they were packaged yesterday. I thought because of the oil in the nut that it would have gone rancid. Great post on REAL WORLD results.. Seriously thats one of the great things about this forum that I think the casual guest doesnt appreciate. How many places can you go that give you test results on 15 year old cereal

Perhaps the better question would be " What website/forum could you go to where most of the members have 15 year old stores?
