freezer failure

the freezer compartment of refrigerator is large...
it made some racket yesterday, we checked it several times (let the cold out!)
but all seemed ok.

this morning... meats are thawing. frozen veggies and fruits are thawing...

as we realized freezer ain't freezing the bride was explaining how she'd cook this and cook that.
we started moving things to additional freezer space.

sort of an eye opener...

what if... this was our only freezer.
what if ... electricity was out... yes I have a small generator, but a noisy hassle and expensive to operate.
what if... this had been the big freezer

no major problem. at worst a new refrigerator, but I expect it will only be a reasonable charge by repariman.
but this is in the times of availability...
I was glad that wife puts most of our veggies/fruit in jars. big hassle.. but not depending on electricity, or a machine to store it!
a lesson for us!
I wondered ... what would I do if there was too much to cook and move to another freezer? and the s had htf?
I would have headed up the road and passed out stuff.
our frozen persimmons are an awesome treat... someone's breakfast would have been sweeter!

Canning can save a lot of food if you have the time and know how. Having two canners is a blessing. Alternate sources of energy in case electricity is the problem.

bottom line problem with fridge was a little white plastic box about 2x3 with a little antennae looking part.
(and before the repairman got here we realized the refrigerator wasn't functioning either)

repairman didn't have our specific part, but had a similar model part and it worked...
we were already calling/checking on prices of a new refrigerator...

hallelujah... repair instead of replacement... and the same ole question...
what if. we are in paw and part breaks... I think I need to get the name of that part and "get me one"
just for a spare...
repairman said it might last 2 months. it may go forever.
he's a friend...he got here about 6 pm. when I asked how much we owed him...
he gave me parts price and then was hesitant to go on.. I know his finances arent' strong.
I suggested a healthy labor/travel price and he grinned and we paid in cash.

just a thought... do you take care of the repairmen that fix your stuff?
if the storm had hit your area, would they come to your house quickly or put you at the bottom of the list?

T -stat....defrost elements and defrost timers are common failures.
Fridges are just small hvac units. Unless your rocking.g a big new fancy CPU controlled unit. But your basic 18-20 cuft fridges only have dome basic parts.
We do elements 4-6 times a month. The glass tube style can be rebuilt....the soild body (think oven element) can not.
Shtf IMHO better to be sporting the 5-700 GE than the 1200$ side by side smart phone controlled LG :)

At my house we don't have a super fancy fridge. It's white and side by side with a water and ice machine that we don't even use. Then we have a horizontal stand alone freezer so we should be okay. I eventually want to see about getting another fridge and solar power or house generator as a backup. Just curious though. Has anyone thought of getting a dual power fridge or freezer. Electric and propane like in RVs. I've put serious thought into it. Even if it was a small one. They can run for quite awhile on propane and from my understanding. Are really sturdy machines. Propane is used for cooking on the grill here but I also have a fire pit. Hence more propane for a fridge. Right now I'm working on getting back to cast iron cooking like when I was young. Also. How many of you out there have enough room for a cellar. Sure. I got a little off topic but just giving ideas on if something craps out and feel the need of justification for the use of propane as a viable option.
