What's your favorite Mountain House meal?

I'm kinda partial to Chicken Teriyaki with rice, but the Lasagna with meat sauce is pretty darn good too.

One that really surprised me was Chili Mac with Beef. That was much better than I figured it would be.

    What's your favorite(s)?

I have tried some MH and WF meals and they both were very salty.

I know some people are all about FD and how they are soooo much better but they ignore or forget about how much sodium are in them.

I struggled with FD vs DH and I made my choice based on the info I had and tasting some samples. Both need water added to them.

LD3 helped me get my head around all this stuff so that I could make an informed decision.

I liked the Chili Mac (reminded me of basic training, we ate a lot of that) but I also ate sandwiches every day for lunch for 7 years before I got tired of them. I know some people can't stand to eat the same thing more than once in a week.

We use a mix in our storage plan. The Freeze dried stuff adds in REAL MEATS versus TVP as well as the need for quick meals from time to time.

Adding hot water and letting it sit for a bit versus 20 minutes to cook requires less fuel. Fuel needs have always been the "bane" of most of our long term preparedness plans. Specially in the suburbs and areas where storing a lot of fuel isn't feasible or even "allowed."

We have tons of the basics packed away- rice, wheat, lentils, pintos, whole corn, etc. but we have also have multiple options for cooking them long term.

Still though, when operating a homestead, just like operating a fast moving household in suburbia, there are times where "quick meals" are nice and darn near necessary. Stop canning and putting up the harvest to allow time to bake bread, cook rice and lentils, etc. or take some of the hot water and "whip up" a quick meal with some freeze dried so that all parties can keep working.

Same goes- all the more so really- for Security. The small group or family with just a few potential guards, will be hard pressed to devote a person or two to do all the necessary prep work for a meal all the time. "Mom" might be a fighter as well- some Kat's have a helluva good scratch :) She might be needed for guard duty, hell she might just need a break here and there.

All of those reasons, amongst others, is why we are adding more freeze dried to our family's storage.

Certain things like fruits, vegetables, etc. will usually still end up cheaper going dehydrated versus freeze dried. Some will like the taste/texture of one processing method better than others. Some products like strawberries, pineapple, etc. may only be available freeze dried.

So a mix of various types of food, methods of packaging, etc. is kinda how we do it and it's worked out well.

Last but not least, I've been given serious thought to life when we are older as well as times when one or more of us might be sick, less physically able, etc. Given a 30 year or more shelf life, some of this we might not rotate till I'm in my 70's. The convenience factor may mean more then, I dunno.

        Just some random thoughts.

          Excellent points!!

For me it came down to being able to get more bulk on the shelf faster then as money allowed I would add certain FD items....real meat like you said. I am hoping to can some food this year to help add to our supplies.

I haven't tried many of them, but the Chili Mac with Beef made me non-hungry and happy... Could have had more...

The MH is soooo expensive in #10 cans, that is the one item I do NOT use and rotate. They are for emergencies only. I will even keep them past the 30 years, when I get there. The pouches I use up here and there, but don't buy many of them due to shorter shelf life and wide availability of other food options.

"Rourke was surrounded by seventeen bikers, all with weapons trained on him. John said "guess you guys don't know your outnumbered" as he pulled the twin Detonics .45's from the cross draw shoulder holsters. Dropping into a crouch he shot all seventeen men in the right eye ball before their eyes could blink. John didn't even have to reload the twin Detonics to shoot seventeen men cause three simply wet themselves and died in fear. Helga Katinka of the Swedish Bikini Team ran up to John and threw her arms around John screaming "oh you are my hero I reward you with good things now." John simply tipped his hat and said "Ma'am it's all in a day's work for an ultra badarse like myself. But now we gotta go, the 4th Mongolian Horde is coming over the Rockies and me and my Detonics .45's have to singlehandedly slay all of them. After a hard day slaying bad guys, I like to curl up with a nice bowl of Mountain House and my Detonics .45's which if you haven't figured out yet are the closest thing to the sword of the Lord in pure slaying power."

It's even worse LISTENING to them on CD versus reading them. And not really all that far off from my fictional account above. If your ever REALLY bored and on the interstate, get gas at one of the big truckstops like Flying J and look in their audiobook section for the audio CD of "The Survivalist" by Jerry Ahern. Be forewarned there are about 28 or so editions of it. Start at the first 1 to get the true picture of how badarse John Rourke really is... LOL
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

you guys are costing me more and more...
now that I see that jrh is selling mountain house...
I'm compiling my list... checking it twice.... adding raspberries!!
having a few cans that we can turn into instant meals without long prep time
have got to be a good thing to have on hand...
I'm comparing to the beans we cook on occasion... and having them soak for a day or so, before they ever get to the stove.
hmm.. beans... I see some peas and beans on the list...

folks this is also a way to support our favorite website!!

My favorite is the MH beef stew and chicken stew. And as mentioned before, some people find MH FD food salty. The reason is the food was developed for people backpacking, camping, on the go, so in that aspect you would be sweating and losing salt by sweating, so that is why they added extra salt. To replace what you lost.
