  • Freezing Milk

We freeze milk in our deep freeze. We have been doing this for several months and only had 1 split, we were able to salvage most of the milk and it didn't make a mess in our freezer, this was a gallon that we had bought at Aldi's.

We usually freeze Sam's Club milk, but have frozen milk from Kroger's and Hy-Vee.

It turns a yellowish color when frozen. To thaw we set in sink full of luke warm to cool water for a few hours. This will melt most of the milk and the rest thaws out while in the fridge. Great for when you find milk on sale!! Like someone I know says "By it cheap and stack it deep!"

we do exactly the same thing 610.. works great. Especially since we only drink organic milk it gets expensive at $6.50 a gallon so we buy 6 or 7 gallons when its on sale. Besides I REALLY like milk and I can use it as ice in a cooler.. LOL BTW, did you freak out the first time you checked on it frozen and saw that it had turned yellow?? I know I did. I was amazed like primitive man looking at fire when it went back to white after thawing.

We have stared buying "Morning Moo's" from Augason Farms and Walmart. The price is about the same as whole milk. Tastes good and great in coffee. Keeps one year afrer opening the can. A #6 can will last me about a month - have not opened a # 10 can yet.
It is a replacement for powdered milk - which I have never liked.

Yeah I know.. but we are kind of weird about our dairy products. I don't like the idea of all the growth hormones and antibiotics. We don't eat chicken or beef with growth hormones or antibiotics either. Maybe its just a Kalifornia thing..

I don't know if the side of beef we get is without hormones or antibiotics or not...I do know its raised locally on a family farm.

Please, please research canning milk very carefully before trying that. It has to be processed at over 280 degrees.

According to most everything I have read, they say not to can dairy products. The ladies over at Mrs. Survival forum advise against it too.

There is a shelf stable milk on the market though made by a Gossner Milk. You can find their products in grocery stores under Gossner label and also under Hershey Milk label. I have even found their products in the Dollar Stores.
