    Having had to throw out/burn a lot of things like this over the years, I've been concentrating on preparing better protected areas for these sorts of things as well as sorting through and downsizing what really might be needed one day and what would likely not.

    Buying "culls" from the local hardware store is a great way to accumulate things like this.

      I try to use things up then re-purpose the remaining parts. I store as many parts as I can find uses for and I have no problem with things being old and still doing the job. Hey I'm getting older but still doing the job!

        I can identify with that! LOL

          I try to re-purpose things but space is key. Large things are harder. The one thing I do re-purpose is the metal shells I take of if electronic devices. I cut them into fourths an store them. I have made some cheap arrow heads out of them for target practice. I have also used large things to mark caches or hide them. For instance where I lie there is a place where everyone dumps tires and mattresses just out side of town. I have a cache there market with some garbage that is unlikely to be disturbed or taken. No metal, scrapers take that.

            I love used tires. I have made a series of walls between the house and barn to hold up the stacked wood for winter. They also could double as concealment positions to make your way from barn to house or house to barn. Used tires, rebar, and dirt can make a helluva good cover position or a backstop for shooting. I can attest that it will stop everything up to and including a .416 Rigby at 50 yards, definately more but that is the biggest rifle I own.
            I also have a dock made along the river that the base is made from a series of used tires. It has been through a major flood and 4 seasonal high waters and that thing only needs the top lumber patched up to be serviceable again.

                Got nervous for a minute when I read the question about cannibals. We moved from a ten room farmhouse with a three story barn and two car garage to as 1200 sq ft cabin with the same size cellar. Cannibalizing has taken on a whole new meaning and storage presents an interesting new challenge in itself. Just seems like almost everything can be repurposed and our next door neighbor is a classic example of saving everything. His pile starts at the road and goes as far back as the eye can see. Wouldn't ya know. He works at the transfer station and can't resist bringing all kinds of goodies home. Just the kind of guy to have be a like minded individual but we don't know him well enough yet. Time for an invite to dinner. lol

                  You sound like us. We moved to our bil this last summer and downsized significantly. It's a challenge finding room for everything but it sure makes you work on being more organized. I'm a heavy equipment operator and nowadays spend most of my time in a road grader traveling about 110 miles of county rock, dirt and shale roads. The guys at work are used to seeing me come back to the shop in the evening with something strapped to my grader. A few days ago it was some pvc guttering and drain pipes that I'll use for a water retention project I'm working on.

                  Sounds like you have a gold mine next door!...chuckle....

                    Justified.....you sound like a hoot! It coud get scary wading into Warren's Wonderful World next door. It sure has been a huge challenge trying to reorganize all the goodies from the move. Moving many of the boxes and other containers presented its own problem to keep from advertising to the world what we were up to. Thankfully we were able to utilize some high school kids who could have cared less what they were moving. Just pay me for my time and I will do whatever you say. lol You sure have a great way of finding all kinds of good stuff. Much happy hunting to you.

                      Cannibal...me? You betcha!!

                      You would be amazed at the amount....the sheer volume......the mountain of stuffed animals that 4 kids will accumulate over 8 years. Especially when 3 of them are girls.
                      Add in a neighbor who has 2 girls that are 11 and 13, you have two 10'x10' metal sheds filled with stuffed animals.
                      Since you cant donate stuffed animals to charity anymore I am thinking of using them for insulation in the hunting cabin. This cabin is not just for hunting but is a b.o.l. for the family.
                      Right now the walls are just tyvek and exterior boarding. I have yet to finnish off any interior walls but if I insulate and board the interior walls, I could heat the bugger so fast you will be in a t-shirt and shorts when it's 10*F outside.

                          Don't know if this will help with the kids any but......using the stuffing for insulation might work and at least would be a hoot but the outside of the animals can be used to make quilts for the kids. That way they can hang onto their very favorites for a long time.
