  • Water Storage Question

I have the opportunity to purchase 55 gallon drums that had been used to ship non toxic shampoo.
Is this safe to store water?
I figure yes, since it is organic and you would use a cleaning agent to was any container out, even new. I would rinse completely, then rinse with bleach solution, and then store with minimal bleach.
    Thank you in advance.

I dont know but my thought is this:
If i have to ask then there will always be doubt as to wheather i am providing the best i can for my family. Food grade barrels ran me about $10-15 on craigslist and i have no doubts and i wouldnt put non toxic shampoo in my mouth. Chemlights are non toxic but i aint gonna eat/drink them

I would agree with Matt...if I wouldn't drink or eat it now, why would I want to endanger my family later. YMMV

I agree they would be good for storing clothing or other supplies that dont deal with food or water. Like they said above if you dont est or drink it now why would you for emergency. Personally No i wouldnt
Whats the point of having and not knowing how to use? You dont have a car and not know how to drive it do you? Having the tools for the job is worthless with out the knowledge of how to use it!

My guess is that you would never get rid of the soap taste, and i think soap gives you the runs. I'm not sure if you would get that or not but hey maybe an investigation is in order. Could be a fun weekend experiment if you do buy them.

Sounds to me like the perfect idea to store water for dish and body/hair washing and even flushing!

Sure it is good for storage for flushing but you can collect dirty water for that. What if you decided to take the risk of using these for water storage and you arent around when it comes time to use it and your children our spouse who doesnt know that it was use for shampoo and they become sick. You potentially put your family and immediate group at risk of being sick. The risk isnt worth the reward in the end

I sell blue barrels to my friends here in the buckeye state but all they had in them was molasses.

Just think how many moles died just to fill one barrell.... what a waste. ;)

Thank you for the input. There is doubt, and you have a good point. I would not put bleach in my mouth also, but I will use it to wash and store the food grade barrels that had syrup in them for double the price.
