  • ok gentlemen, how do you

prepare the beans, rice, etc to where you don't go out of your mind when you eat them a couple of times a day for an extended period?

after a week of beans and rice and the other normal prepps, i get to where i don't eat

and yes i have the recipes and the spices....but the thrill is gone

Honestly I've never understood the "food has to WOW! me" mentality. Sure it's nice to have a little change now and then, but we've ate like this for years. You get to love rice, lentils, home grown green beans, little bit of rabbit, goat, deer or chicken. Throw a little Tony C's on everything, Buttery Spray on the beans and rice. Eating that 5 or so days a week, maybe homemade pizza another night, maybe a pasta another night.

Our boy grew up on that, he loves it also.

Variety helps if you need that sort of thing- black beans instead of lentils sometimes, make refrieds, make some homemade tortillas with refrieds and have burritos.

It's like my buddy said about Taco Bell- "It's all the same crap just stacked differently." LOL
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

I agree with 1Admin. Although I love to cook and share the duties (we cook a pretty wide variety between the two of us) remeember; this is preparing for survival. Yes, once we reach our goal of having basic staples for a specified length of time, we'll branch out with some variety. Most of the dishes I cook contain at least either rice or pasta so both go into the LTS as do sugar and spices. Once I get to a years supply of food, I plan on buying a pre-packaged bucket of prepared food to 'sprinkle' through the other stores to break the monotany. In even a limited short-term situation we'll be thankfull to have the basic rice/bean/spice combination to eat while others that aren't prepared go hungry.

This is why I'm not a big fan of packing away food only for some event or another. Food is more than calories. It's morale. It's family time. Eating gruel every day might keep you alive, but it won't put a smile on your face. I don't think variety is as important as taste when it comes to food getting 'old'. In my opinion it's better to start getting recipes that taste great and all of the ingredients can be locally sourced or stored. Which generally means a lot of cooking from scratch. This is how most of the world lives.

One of the discusions we have had at work is eating. The power went down and i ate my lunch anyway. It was pecooked and not harmful but the fact that it wasnt warm, garnished and catered appualled my coworkers. I explained that while serving in the military i simply ate to keep enough to keep going as we spent alot of time out and about away from diners, mess halls and the fast food joints. Main meals mean little or nothing to me more than fuel but i do get enjoyment out of the little snacks here and there. I have eaten the same thing over and over until burnout set in several times in my lifetime even before the Army as we were not well off and many times the menu didnt vary much. Creativty is key as is mindset in the matter. Since having left i do enjoy a good meal more than ever but it doesnt take but a moment for me to go back to my mode of its just fuel.
After a week the neighbors cat is gonna look real good in my rice LOL no seriously you have to have more than just beans n rice and oatmeal as after time you will begin to deteriorate from vitamin deficiencies.

The wife made PAW casserole Monday night.
            Corn
            Shredded chicken
            Onions
            Black beans
            Rice
            And a few mexican spices.

            I could eat that everyday.

As well as spaghetti. I wish I could get burned out.
I ate Panda Express same items everyday for 10 + months. Ate Zaxbys every day for over a year. I am a creature of habit.
