  • Visiting the LDS Cannery Today

The nearest Cannery has not been a "Working Cannery" for about a year but they still sell all of the products and lend out there #10 Canners for two weeks at a time.
We are going to buy a few of their bulk items, but are going to use the canners to put away many more bulks that we; Have on hand, Can get, either locally or have shipped in a short amount of time. It is a pretty cool deal.

I have seen on other threads suggestion for putting away-storing different foods.

I would like to know,,,, If you had a #10 Canner what sort of things would you drop into cans and sealup for later use or just safe storage?

We have 5 and six gallon buckets and gammas, most are full and sealed

Do you have suggestions on where to pickup bulk foods on the cheap?

The Staples are easier to just buy through the cannery and even have them shipped here.
Delivered by Fedex and No Shipping was charged!

Most of this has been talked about...wheat, corn, popcorn can be bought at Grain Elevators if you have them near you.

Look on youtube for videos made by PAW Productions - delta69alpha and also Survival Report.

Also some super walmart locations carry whole wheat hard red/white. If you order from LDS the box will say LDS on it and may have other info that could tip off a delivery person that you are stockpiling food -- Opsec.

If you buy from JRH the box will be completely blank and the from Address will say JRH Enterprises on it. The only other one I know of that will do this is Emergency Essentials but you have to request it.

Do some searches on the forum and I bet you will find some more info. Hope this helps

Potato flakes, black beans, pinto beans, white beans, dehydrated fruits, dehydrated vegetables, non-fat powdered milk, white rice, granulated sugar, red wheat, white wheat, white flour, pasta, oats, the list is endless. Don't forget to throw the oxyget absorbers in before you seal the cans and be sure to lable the cans.
The best prices that I have ever found for bulk foods are at the LDS cannery. They are limited on variety tho so you might want to get some different foods at Sam's club.

I remember a thread where lowdown3 talked about which items he buys already sealed in #10 cans and which stuff he does himself all of which is based on his personal experience of 20+ years and LD3 used to run a cannery!! so do a search heck it might be a Sticky Note type of thread in one of the forums here.

When we had the cannery, dehydrated milk came in 2,000 lb. "totes." That was a huge bag on a pallet.

Everyone that worked for me hated to see pallets of milk come in. It meant that we had to stop everything else we were doing and can milk non stop till it was all gone. You had to or you risked losing a high dollar item quickly to humidity.

And the milk powder got EVERYWHERE. Almost a half day to can a "tote" of it and it seemed like almost another half day to clean up afterwards...

Some items it is better for the DIY home packer to purchase already pre-packaged. These include: cheese powder, dehydrated eggs, milk, tomato powder, butter and margarine powder, etc. In their true dehydrated form they are all extremely hydroscopic. You can easily ruin lbs. of it easily and this is all stuff that is measured in dollars per lb. instead of like $.30 cents a lb. like rice or wheat.
This came from the aptly named thread "DIY Food Storage ask questions get answers"

Thanks for all the replies, I did order a case of each from LDS of the basics a few few months back. ooops on opsec, I will be picking up anything else they offer when I return the canner.
I have most all of the basics and alot of what people are suggesting. I was kinda thinking about other oddities one might pack in cans, I ordered 10 extra thinking I might put some...easily packed and stored items, The wife bought undies and socks to put in one can for out of the way easily portable, long term storage.
610Alpha, I had checked that thread out early in my membership, Great Info!!
Qrprat77 - would a crank radio be protected - faraday style in a can?
Karen - I do need to find a source for quality fruits. Thanks.
They were very helpful even had another person buying milk they let me try the LDS milk.....uh not for me!! China Marts GV brand is much better, just haven't found it in more than a big box bulk! Would love to have more - cheaper. We had already purchased 35# of it the GV.

610 Alpha's link to LowDown3's is Great Info!!!
I have wanted to get access to a #10 canner to put together some basic year packs. Have a lb. of pepper, sage, sea salt, 20 lighters, other spices that you don't use much of but make life better. I would like 10 of those cans. Then TSP, Sugar, Salt, things that it would be nice to open a smaller can at a time rather than the 5-6 gal pail when you need some salt.
Also ammo would be great I have several spam cans basically you would be making your own spam cans plus you can add O2 absorbers. Primers and other reloading components. I have several ammo cans full of bullets that are getting some corrosion on them now packed in the 90's.

There are LDS churches all over, I guess it is up to each Bishop as to how they operate and if they will lend canners, I really would like to be able to get things, cans... closer to home but... Cans with lids are really cheap, still haven't found any local though. had a bit of a drive to pick the cans and canner up.

Bio, what Bishops storehouse did you go to?

I see you're in NKY, I'm in SW OH and wondered how far it was from me.
