  • Do you stock mouse poison...

traps, or bug killers like wasp spray, or even roach sprays? I was thinking about storing some of these things along with some insecticides and other items for the garden. Organic is great, but it isn't a hill I am willing to sacrifice my family on...KWIM?

Yes...mouse & rat baits, glue traps (work on snakes, too), wasp spray that shoots out to 30 feet, fly bait, some cheap cigars (use them to acquire the nicotine - then spray the "tea") and various powdered insecticides. Oh...can't forget about the fire ant killer!

I do not store rat/mouse poison, but I do stock a couple of cats. I have a few cans of insect spray, but not a lot.

Which does bring up a good point. Not to hijack, but pets, specifically dogs and cats, have great uses in a PAW situation. While they might need some additional food and care, that can easily be supplemented by what nature provides in the form of mice, rats and small birds, at least for the cats. Traps and rodent poison will eventually run out, but cats are a long term investment that can pay off huge as well as "replenishing" themselves.

I bought generic round-up by the five gallon container from the co-op. I mix 6 oz. to a gallon of water. Should last a long time.

Boltgun - If you'll add about 1 Tablespoon of liquid detergent (surfactant) to your gallon mixture it'll penetrate the plants waxy defenses better and be more effective. I use Blue Dawn(RTM) - it seems to work best.
We keep a ton of traps. We had a puppy get very sick over finding a poisoned mouse. I have 40 snap traps on hand right now ($1 - 4 traps)- I ALWAYS keep two baited with peanut butter, around our LT stores, even though we don't have a mouse problem. I would hate to find out I had mice after they had attacked the food! We rebait nearly every weekend.
Matt- We keep cats around, I refuse to make them "pets" we do feed them but there is a definite correlation between quantity of food and mousing desire!! I appreciate our cats but don't think they make good house pets. They are barn cats that have a little socialization. It would be a little harder to have stir fry feline if they had been lounging on the back of the couch the day before!!
MustangGal You can get BT and Hot pepper liquid mixes that do a pretty decent job at ridding your garden of bugs. I do keep Seven on hand and use cickens in an infestation.

I'm not Matt, there is no way he'll ever be this good looking lol

But even barn cats and semi feral ones will have their uses (other than stir fry lol). But those kinds tend to follow the food sources and pick where they want to live. And if they are getting fed at a particular location, they will stay in that location. Just remember, dogs have masters, cats have staff.

Cockroaches disgust me like no other bug. I think I am going to try to store some bug spray, but also borax. Especially since it can be used to make laundry detergent as well.

For the roaches get the gel seringes from walmart that fimpernal is the main ingredent. It works the best and you only use a drop the size of a pin head. They eat it then die, then others eat them and there poop then die. Works very fast. Lasts for months.

Thank you! We don't have a roach problem, but every time I see a bug that even remotely resembles a cockroach, I FREAK OUT.

Grand, I am sooo sorry about that, had read one of Matts' posts and just typed without looking!! I love the Cats have Staff comment, on the following food, Yes, that is why we feed them, some, not enough to keep them fat, just hangin around.
In florida we had palmetto bugs-cockroaches on growth hormone! Chickens Loved snacking on them. they would gater under ANYTHING left out and fly at a pretty good clip!. I hate roaches of all sizes and keep plenty of "no bugs in the home" juice on hand. If I have my way they WILL NOT outlive humanity!
Matt, don't be so hard on yourself, ur sxy in ur own way!!! LOL

Fire ant pesticide is a must here - after using Amdro for years I found that Bengal works quicker and better.
Norway rats have been an off and on problem - we keep pelletized poison for them. We just use it in the feed shed so birds don't get at it.
Mice - not a problem, the black snake that lives by the stable and the red rat snake that lives in the garden both appear to be well fed.
Wasps - I am allergic to the sting, so wasp spray is essential. It could literally mean life or death.
Cats are not allowed - wife is allergic.
The gray foxes in the woodlot eat a lot of things that otherwise could become a problem.

If you have mice, take a five gallon bucket and put some cornmeal in the bottom of it . Place a board from the floor up to the rim of the bucket and you will catch every mouse in the house.

mousing cats. traps for flies & wasps. swatters for other insects indoors. borax for roaches (they also supposedly are repelled by cucumber skins - never tried it because i never had them. chives repel ants-I plant it near my door, seems to work.
