sunscreen is something that i don't see on many "need to get" lists

i visited the skin dr recently and was chastised for not wearing hats or using sunscreen
as i'd been previously instructed by the doc.
my lack of preparation/prevention led to the need to have several "spots" removed that had long names that were "precancerous" and other bad sounding descriptions.

the frequency of this type events is drastically increasing i've been told.
"just thinking" as one of our mods like to say..
if we go into a challenging time, we will all be working outside more.
the sun is doing flares that are causing more problems here on earth.
i doubt my skin dr. will still be working, and his office is too far to walk so
    i'd best follow his advice

my newest item on our shopping list.
    sunscreen.
off brand and big containers is my idea.

I'm under the impression the commercial sun screens do NOT store well so you might want to find a recipe or 2 and stock some basic ingredients to make you own in hard times. I know zinc oxide is a basic ingredient. Here's a start

There's no substitute for covering up. I'm always in pants, long sleeve shirt and a hat. With the right fabric shirt, having long sleeves is cooler than no shirt at all. At least when the humidity is low.

Had good luck with the frog. Bullfrog.

It's not greasy. Not overly scented. Does well with water and perspiration. One version has some insect repellant in it. No white crap all over.

Found some in a training bag that I bought at a class in 01 or 02?? We were out of it last year. Used the last of the bottle from 01-02, worked just fine. I'm sold on the frog.

I have found that there are many types of sunscreen. Some people like one type and other people like a different brand. Find one you like and stock up. I have some that I prefer and have stocked up on those brands. I have had a few skin cancers and pre-cancers (Actinic Keratosis) so I use sunscreen daily. Post PAW, sunscreen will be used and then it will be gone, so find some sun-protective clothing/hats as well. These can be found online and usually in sports stores. If you watch closely you can find them on sale at deep discounts. There is also a laundry product that can be bought called Sun-Guard made by Rit. Might be worth it to have some of this as well.

We buy all of our sunscreen in the fall and winter when its on clearance.

I cut the grass yesterday and didnt wear a hat (wanting to get a lil color on me) and I am paying for it today. My scalp and shoulders are pink and I couldnt sleep well. Learned a valuable lesson. Just think, in the PAW, you wont be able to take a day or two to recoup.

            Good thread.

Just to throw this out; My understanding is that SOME brands of sunscreen contain ingredients that you don't necessarily want to have on your body. Highly toxic, bad effects, etc. It would pay to do some research and make an informed decision. You can also do a search on "Problems with sunscreen" or something similar to learn more. Keep in mind that everything, and I mean everything, you put on or in your body will have some kind of effect. It's better to know what those effects are.

The link I posted does have an alternative. You may not like the ingredients, but it does work as a very good sunscreen.

Not really necessary to be outside. The recipe only uses 3/10 of an ounce of zinc powder which is not much at all and would not be "floating" in the air. Just wear a mask if you are concerned about inhaling any. The only "cooking" done is to melt the wax to blend in the oils and powder.
