  • In vehicle long gun lock/storage

This past weekend my "House Queen" and I went on a quick road trip aroung the Olympic Pennsula, to make a long strory short the water pump on the truck went out. So we had to get towed back to the nearest town & leave the truck with one rifle overnight at the auto repair shop. The Shop locked the truck inside their building so that was ok, but I didn't have a way of locking the gun up inside the truck. I did have a storage box; one of those under the bed plastic things, that I put the gun in and covered it up with clothing, freeze dried food, & etc.
Needless to say I'm now looking for a better solution. I have a lockable rifle case, but I have always tried to keep the stuff in the truck low profile, under the dog pillows in the crew cab area.
My feeling is that a rifle case looks like a rifle case and thus an attractive thing to break into or steal, wear the clear plastic box doesn't look important.
I have looked at buying a truck vault for the bed of the truck but it's priced out of my range.
    Any comments or suggestions?

Go to your local high school, after school hours (dont want to be seen as a possible pedo). Ask any and all adults you see for directions to the principal's office, this breaks down their defence mechanism, very important to do nowadays on a school campus. When there ask the principal two things, do they have an adult learning program for their shop classes (you would be wanting the metal class) and if not, ask if with his/her permission if you provide the class with the raw metal (they love free supplies) if you could ask the shop teacher (again NOT asking NONadult students directly) to have the student class to fabricate you a steel lock box.

If they have adult classes, you dont have to enroll, just ask the adult students how much they would charge for them to make you one. Again, usually free if you provide the raw material.

Have a diagram with EXACT measurements. Inner demensions would be adequate for the gun you want to store, and outer demensions small enough to BOLT to your underseat frame or behind the rear seat lumbar frame.

    Hope this helps. =)

        Chrysler's Gun-Toting Pickup Truck
Chrysler's Ram truck division is taking direct aim at hunters with a unique feature on its new line of Outdoorsman pickup trucks - a gun closet.

Called the The Mopar RamBox Holster, its a rack that can hold two rifles or shotguns inside one of the lockable, watertight compartments located on either side of the pickup bed.

A $205 option - on top of the $1895 price of the RamBox feature itself - the rack can be rotated to hold six fishing poles for those who prefer quieter trips into the great outdoors.

The Outdoorsman starts at $28,350 and includes standard features like scratch-resistant bumpers, puncture-resistant tires, and a towing package. Buyers can order the trimline on most Ram models, including heavy duty and long wheelbase versions.

I have been looking at this for my truck. Not lockable, but I figured I would keep a "motorcycle/bike lock" in there and secure it if needed to seat brackets. It won't be a gun safe, but would maybe deter a thief if needed to.

I did an online search for you and found these as well:

Thanks for the links. A couple of years ago I got a quote from the truck vault folks, it was about 2k.
