My wife and I have had this talk, about how we would help family out...
My retired parents have laughingly told me about the wacko guy near them who is storing food in his basement, so I'm not inclined to tell them how much food I have in my basement..

My sister (Commie pinko lib..) would freak if she knew I actually had guns AND bullets in my home, to defend my family.

My brother would be outraged that I have stored food, instead of beer...

So maybe after the SHTF, I may help them... After they've been hungry a while and have come to their senses.

      thanks - good thoughts.
back to my mom. (and dad)
for a while both my parents were in an assisted living home as they both had medical issues.
i posted a similar question on another internet board a few years back.
a popular poster said put a bullet in their head. that didn't go over well with me, but that's another story.
dad has passed away. my mom is at their home and doing welll.
      --
what would i do... i'd tell her to take the xxx road and head my way. there are several relatives in the first half of her trip. in case of emergency. pull in. i'm on the way and will meet me you and we'd then head back to my house. i WOULD go to her home if necessary and get her.
i realize a lot of folks wouldn't try. i'm glad to see that they/you have at least discussed it and made those decisions. making decisions early will make things easier then, and the decisions mean that my family must be vigilant and respond quickly.
      --
the next two closest kin that i care about strongly are in the same direction as mom. but further off.
it will be tough for me to get to them. they've got to get here. it would be tough. they'd have to get a big head start. both are strong and smart. but it's a long way. i Would put myself at risk to go get them as necessary and if possible.
      --
for the rest of the folks i mentioned.
well. you guys have explained that pretty well.

        oh yeah. one more thought.

two fellas live near each other, and they are the best of hunting, or boating or camping
or survivalist buddies, or church buddies or firemen buddies, and
joe knows tim's mom and yep she's 85 but she still gardens and puts up food and wears frugal clothes and loves the Lord, and takes care of herself. and only lives across town...

and tim brags how he AIN'T gonna go 'n get his mom. (who sure knows how to tend that garden, those chickens and rabbits and old ways of patching the sick, and curin' up the ailin' animals) then it just seems to me that ole joe best not be counting on tim to come to his rescue when the stinky stuff comes joes way. ole tim gonna run and hide!!

I met this great preacher... read and quoted the Word of the Lord. ex military man. real constitutional talking fella. mighty impressive fella. gun totin. 2nd amendment preaching, singing, he had it all. voted right.

BUT he WASN't caring for his ailing wife.

and she had a curable situation.
my little lady, got my attention when she said... "something's real bad wrong here.... " i didn't like hearing it. not a bit.
dang if little lady wasn't right.
if the preacher ain't gonna care for the one he vowed before God almighty to care for...
we ought not to be placing any of our trust in him!!
how can i think that preacher will bring his sword to my defense?

(btw, we pray for the preacher's wife.. and the preacher!)

Just wanted to clarify a bit. My decisions are based on practicality. If things are so bad that I would need to try and go 1200 miles to pick someone up, then chances are pretty good that there is not going to be food, fuel or shelter available along the way. Stop and think for a moment just how much equipment would have to go along, and the risk of making a 2400 mile journey when all bets are off. IF all roads are open, IF noone tries to accost me, IF I don't get pulled by LEOs along the way and have supplies "redistributed"....it all translates into IF I can make it home alive.

To my way of thinking, the end result does not warrant the risk. Not a spur of the moment decision by any stretch. To care for my family, I need to be alive.

RR...you were fortunate that your eyes were opened to the misdeeds of your preacher in time. All too many folks in the world seem to be following the righteous path...except for xxxxxxx. And that exception usually turns out to be a character flaw of huge proportion once it is brought to light. As we are all human, we all have flaws. We must work to correct them best as we can and seeking the Lords guidance is always a good route. But all of the guidance in the world is useless if we don't take the advise. Stay true to the course!

My parents, though they aren't preppers, they have both been exceedingly poor and they have always gardened, canned, kept plenty of food on hand. My mom wouldn't last long without her medication. :( My dad would, but he would be cranky as heck! He has degenerative disc disease and a great deal of back pain. My sisters - one of them probably not, as she is generally worthless. The other - maybe, if they could or would come. They are pretty well off, but live like most people - lots of debt, big fancy house, cars, etc.

DH's parents are both gone now. A bit of a relief that we wouldn't have to go get his mother from the nursing home. I'm not sure how we would care for her here with her medical needs. She wouldn't have lasted long either.

DH's sisters.... one of them lives on a large farm and would probably get by better than most. They have two children who are both police officers. They are very athletic and could probably make the 100 plus mile trip better than most. The sister other might go to her home, but I don't think she would come here. Her and her husband work, but they have a large tribe of rather shiftless children/grandchildren.

We would probably need to provide for some in our neighborhood, just to be able to protect our livestock. Most people here realize if you kill the chickens you eat today, but if you let them lay eggs, you eat a bit everyday.

I am fortunate in that my sibs and I were raised 'prepper' before it was called that. All can handle themselves, we have mutual agreements in place to use each others locations for bug out if needed - we are spread geographically which makes it somewhat useful. But even though one of my brothers says he is not a prepper (working too hard to spend time at it, he says) he had the mind set and skills and reads much about it. Other than immediate sibs, father and best pal, there are limits on how much time/risk I would take for others

Right now, it's just for me, my wife and 19yo son. Both of our families are 500 miles plus away so they're pretty much on their own. I'm only acquaintences with my neighbors so I'm not prepping for them. I'll give them a light hand if they ask, but that's it so far.

I am prepping for my wife and I. I have plans to hold onto a few extras for barter and handout (very limited) but even my Son and his girlfriend who live at the bottom of our property are on their own and they know it, I have stated my case, and let them know where things stand in the world, nation and on the porperty. "You wanna prepare, work for it, you are welcome, you wanna sponge you will be considered a looter.

I love him but I WILL NOT SACRIFICE MY WIFES OR MY OWN LIFE because the grasshopper wanted to lay back and enjoy the sun.

This little ant enjoys the sun while he is squirreling away those needed items. May sound cold and cruel, but I have made a promise to help those who help themselves, those who refuse to help themselves are leaches and looters when supplies are more valued than gold.

Dying together as a starving family is not my idea of being a parent! Do know they are financially capable of putting away more in a month than I am!

I prep for my immediate family. I have another family member that preps, and they are my back-up BOL. They live about 7 mi. from me, and have a retreat property that is the Back -up BOL, but it is about an hour and a half away, so it is the Back -up. My sister lives close, but she and her family are questionable at best because of her lifestyle and family members. My brother and dad live about 7-8 miles away. My brother would be welcome, but my wife has a problem with my dad, so there would be some serious conflict there. Most likely we would Bug-Out to her parents that are only a few miles away, and better set up to provide mutual support for a SHTF, WROL, or other situation, where we would have to wory about our continued safety, so if any of my family came looking for us for help.......
I hate to think about turning away any family, but like Goatlady said, you can't help everyone, so I'll ask for God's guidence if or when the time comes, and hope and pray that a lot of my family wake up, and start to prepare.
"It has been said that preparedness and being prepared promotes fear. This isn't true.......being UNPREPARED is what promotes fear"

That's all you can do Dim Tim. We've got family we would worry about but because of their lifestyles and political idealogy it would be tough welcoming them in to our home. Some of our family have contributed to the condition the country is in.

You have to factor in the relationship, their usefulness (besides just having "another gun"), their ability to keep their mouth shut, their willingness to WORK and CONFORM and their proximity to you.
Those that seem willing and are making an effort NOW, will get more help. I like this statement and the factors that are included make sense. Can they keep the 3S rule? Some will say anything when the time comes to get let in. We have been warned about who can and will betray us, if you can't trust them now, then they can not be trusted then.
It was part of the bargain we all made, the reason we were so willing to die for one another. I cannot say where we are headed. Ours are not perfect friendships....

i've had to change my plans on this topic several times over the years. i was widowed and then retired in just 1 short year recently and now am on plan4. God doesn't need my permission to change my life and i've come to know that he is not a practical joker. he has more pressing things to do than mess with old hayseed. i mention this because before i believed i had no reason to prep. why would i want to come through the other side of a bad shtf deal if there wasn't something bigger than just little ole me to consider.
i married late and have no children but have raised neices and nephews who think preppers and survivalists like me are nuts because bill maher said so. my last visit i told them they would have to get out here on their own. i was reunited with some friends i prepped with in earnest when we all thought clinton would declare martial law. we went our ways and odly all came back here in our old age to stick it out if it really gets bad in our lifetime. we all know each others warts and can live with them. we have a rally point to wait a little while and if nessacary we have a worthless little northfacing canyon 2 days hard walking where we have just enough to muddle through the first winter and see what happens with our famalies. we have all agreed that none of them can have any say in anything until they earn it. it ain't much but its what we are going with. it took 30 years of friendship to get to this so it wasn't easy. just 5 of us now and we are all over the hill and under the weather but we believe that we have a purpose bigger than us and its what we need to make it.

                            hay,
                            you "know" these guys.
                            friends.
                            you trust them
                            that is awesome.
i think you just went a long way to
explaining how to start a group.

Ditto rockriver. Patriot Lady and me are just getting to know some fellow preppers and hope to get to the point where if we had to bug out somewhere together we would. I'm really hoping we can "bug in" the home we're going to buy, unless someone beats us to it.
