Yep. Just be sure it's sodium hypochlorite. There is a lot of different pool care chemicals out there now.

Just to clarify things - In granular form it will be listed as calcium hypochlorite as the active ingredient on the pool shock package. Make sure this is the ONLY active ingredient. Once diluted as instructed with water it becomes sodium hypochlorite aka bleach.

Yes, my calcium hypochlorite came from a pool supply store.
The owner even knew why I wanted it and reiterated it needs to be calcium, not sodium.

We live in a Northern climate, so we can only do this during the spring and summer, but if you can.......keep a swimming pool. Great emergency water source, and great way to beat the summer heat like we are getting right now. Also a good reason to store and stock the chemicals under the radar of neighbors that don't prep.

A little note on this. I filled the pool up Monday to the top. It's Saturday morning. Each block is one square inch. The pool is down 8 inches in 5 days.

I have to admit; a lot of these tips are pretty funny. The gentleman in the video suggested that pool shock was good for a long term drinking water supply. That is hilarious.

I have heard if you use swimming pool shocks regularly (usually once per week), it will keep your pool clean, healthy and free of chloramines. Chloramine is chlorine that is no longer effective. I always assumed a strong chlorine smell was good, but actually it means there is too little free available chlorine in your pool. One place to check is familyleisure.com which carries pool shocking products.

read the labels, there is normally only 92-98% actve hypochlorite.....whats the other 2-3%...is what i wanna know.

While i agree that have redundant means of water purification is key, people shouldnt just go buy pool shock and consider it done. After all whats a bag of shock..9-20$......and folks will drop that way faster than they will 300$ for a good drip/filter set up.

With I have used 3 drops (using an eyedropper) of standard (non-scented) chlorine bleach per quart of water to make drinkable water. I leave the quart container uncapped for a half hour to lessen any chlorine taste. I'm not recommending anything here, just sharing what has worked for me.

I am not sure I would trust pool shock for treating water. When I had a pool it did not take much to over shock the pool. That was a large pool, not sure I would trust the ability to measure the exact amount need to treat much smaller amounts of water.

There are just to many other options available for safe water.

It's just another way to make chlorine bleach. Once you get into it, it's not really that much different from what alot of towns do to the water
