  • Oats question

Well I am having problems splitting my video into 2 parts so I will just describe it.

Got 50 lb bag of oats but they still have an outer shell unlike wheat that I bought from the same grain elevator.

Do I give the oats to my father in law for the horses or what?

Ooooo, supposedly the hulls on oats are pretty darn tough to get off.

The oats we have always put up are the rolled oats variety. This is just like what's in the little round paper drum with the Quaker guy on out the outside.

All that's needed for preparation of those is hot water. They are already de-hulled.

The wheat I'm sure is probably whole, but it will not have the harder hull that oats will have. I've grown oats a couple times but they all went to the bunnies and chickens.

Actually, you will need to plant them or give to chickens. Horses have to have rolled oats also. They cannot digest them with the hull on. Sorry.

Goats can handle them too, but I think other than chickens it would need to be a ruminant type animal. :(

Your correct I'm sure. I just know horses can deal with the hulls. They will just sit there and swell. Goats would love them I'm sure.

I'm confused (normal) if the horse can't deal with the hulls, then how can they eat oat hay which has the 'tops' left on? Not trying to start a ruckus but I used to feed our horses oat hay a lot. Could be that by having the whole plant they are able to digest it all. Just curious.
wonder if you could make a mash for distilling?

You can turn those oat groats into rolled oats with an oat roller. Saw some advertised on Amazon for about $50-65. I haven't tried it yet myself but plan to in the future as oats aren"t hard to grow in this area.

I have fed oats to my horses without any problems. Yeah, they are harder to digest and some of them make it all the way thru the digestive track, but the horses chew most of them up and digest them.
