    Another point to consider will be the availability of meat when your family hits really hard times, like unemployment or illness or gas reaching $5+ a gallon. How many of us know people who don't consider a meal complete without a slab of meat on their plate?I live in the 'burbs so I have no access to fresh meat unless I visit the butcher or a local megamart. I do can meat but after a while, that will get used up.

    I think for some people, maybe myself included, they are mentally used to eating meat at many of their meals and after so many nights of having vegetables for dinner, one may get tired of eating "the same old thing."

    Obviously some people benefit from a meatless diet (as seen above) but I also think we should consider the mental/emotional aspects of having to change our diets. Hopefully by starting to practice a more "green" diet now will lessen the stress if the time comes that we have to eat that way all the time.

    I hope we can all eat whatever we want for dinner for the rest of our lives but I'm not sure how well that's going to work out.

        Patriot Prepper,
        You mention fasting as one way you train your body, but also mention that most people have so many toxins built up that they need to be monitored if they fast over 3 days. Does fasting for 24 hours have any benefit for the body or is there a minimum amount of time needed to gain some sort of benefit? How often do you fast say in a month or a year? When you fast, are you only drinking water and consuming nothing else?

            I HAD three very close veggie friends. They all three had been of that diet for over 30 years. All non-smokers, all big time workout addicts.

            Two died of massive heart attacks. One from a massive stroke.

            My oldest daughter (37) is never sick, picture of health. Big time meat eater and veggie lover, as I am. Youngest daughter (35) has been vegan for close to 12 years. ALWAYS sick.

            Balance is the trick.

              Absolutely Climber, Balance IS the trick as in balancing the foods for the best protein/calorie/vitamin/mineral contents. Too heavy on the dairy products can produce the heart and artery problems you mentioned as happening to your friends. Moderation and balance will produce life long health.

                Im with you. I agree with the Greeks, 'everything in moderation'. We are omnivores for a reason, it allowed humankind to eat whatever needed to be eaten to survive. It would seem to me that extreme dieting of any kind has its drawbacks and risks. Besides, everybody dies of sumpthin'. It is better to keep your spiritual life up to snuff, then you need not be afraid of what comes next. So relax, folks, sheathe those swords. Its getting heated in here. Lets swap recipes instead, betcha you got some I'd like and vice versa.

                  Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I dropped of the grid for a while. Yes fasting for 24 hours can have benefits. I used to fast for 24 hours once a week.

                  Also, there are many benefits to fasting besides health and detoxifying the body. Fasting gives you a sense of knowing that you are in control of your body. It is a great way to discipline yourself. When you realize that you do not need to put food into your system as often as most people do, you become liberated. Overcoming the sense of hunger will help you learn what is real hunger and what is a false hunger.

                  In our country, people are too used to eating 3 or more times a day. When they miss a meal they suffer low blood sugar levels and also start feeling week. For years I trained myself to eat one meal per day without repercussions. I have also fasted for weeks without a loss of strength. The body is an amazing machine and you have control of it if you exert that control. In a SHTF situation or when bugging out, I know I can operate without having to worry about missing a few meals and can go without food for several days and still function well.

                  When fasting go at your own pace. If you want to try a short fast, you might start with missing a few meals at a time. Then go for a 24 hour fast before trying a 3 day. Fasting is a great experience. I do not mean to impose any religious beliefs on anyone, but Biblical references to fasting are there for a purpose and Christians are instructed to fast and pray. Fasting is also useful for healing many conditions. It is an art and a science and must be treated with respect and intelligence. Do not push yourself too far past your perceived limitations. There are safe limits to fasting. God bless you.

                    Timothy Bradley, a vegan vegetarian, just beat Manny Pacquiao in a controversial 12 round decision last weekend.

                    Pacquiao was an 8 x world champion, won 54 pro fights with 38 knock outs. One of boxing's greatest fighters. Bradley was a welter weight champion with 28 wins and 12 knock outs.

                    Although I believe that Pacquiao really won the fight, credit must be given to Bradley for going the distance and winning the decision. As a Vegan vegetarian, Bradley is in incredible condition. He seems very knowledgeable regarding nutrition. Vegans do not eat meat in any form, no chicken, fish, beef, etc. They also do not eat any food related to animals including dairy products or eggs.

                    The point I am making is that you do not need meat to be powerful and strong with great endurance. Professional boxers are among the best conditioned athletes in the world. Bradley just proved, you do not need meat to be healthy or to be strong. In fact, meat eating, especially excess is unhealthy.

                    I am not claiming that you should become a vegetarian. I am not a vegetarian. But as a survival tactic for a SHTF situation, there are great advantages to not eating meat.

                    I was a vegetarian for 7 years and a raw food vegan vegetarian for 2 years. As a raw food vegan, I ate no meat, fish, chicken, eggs, dairy, etc. Also I did not eat any cooked food like rice, pasta. Everything was raw. I not only survived, but I healed some health issues.

                    For survival nutrition, learning how to survive without eating animal flesh, eggs, dairy, or even cooked food will give you an advantage.
