I just received my Katadyn filter system and I took everything out of the box and it all seems to look good and in order. My question is, should I try it out to make sure it works? My only concern is I really don't plan on using it again unless we have an emergency situation. It is basically an insurance policy for my family should a crisis occur. I guess what I am wondering is if I just use the unit a few times to make sure it works and then pack it up and store it for future use will the filters become moldy or compromised from sitting with water that has been filtered through them? I plan on eventually buying some back up filters but I want to get the maximum usage out of the original filters also. Can anyone offer any advice?

I have an Aqua-Rain for emergencies, as i do not need it for daily use as I have an under-sink RO (reverse-osmosis), so I tested mine for a few weeks, gently cleaned the ceramic filters, then let them thoroughly dry. I then packed it back up 100% dry and it sits ready if needed. They are SIMPLE things really, so I do not worry too much about constant testing. I have spare gaskets and a spare set of filters too so I don't lose sleep at night worrying about it...-=> Rmplstlskn <=-

Thank you Protus and Rmplstiskn for your responses, this is good information which I can use. Grinnan, I already purchased the Katadyn so I don't need information regarding where to buy it. I did inquire with the site you listed but I was able to find the exact same model somewhere else for a better price. 1Admin, I asked for information here because I thought many people here own the Katadyn and maybe they could help me out. Thanks to those who did.

One thing we have always told people, is that if/when you contact us (JRH Enterprises), let us know your on S and P if your looking for a "deal" or if something you want to purchase isn't currently on sale. Forum members get discounts, free stuff thrown in with their orders, etc.
We don't just magically "know" you are on the forums however, unless you tell us.
We will happily match any other company's legitimate price -where we can- on any product we carry FOR FORUM MEMBERS. Again, you have to let us know that your a forum member when you contact us.
And yes, your prep purchases at JRH Enterprises DIRECTLY support this forum. We appreciate those that give back to what we have done here with the free information sites to help educate people. Most prep companies don't do that sort of thing. We give back to the movement because we are real survivalists, not slick businessmen trying to make a fast buck or Johnny Come Lately's like so many out there right now.
We appreciate the folks that support the forums here, the Podcast and the Youtube site via their purchases through JRH Enterprises.www.homesteadingandsurvival.com

im torn between being "old" protus....on some of these "after i bought it threads" and being the new improved "happy" protus.....
all of my "big" ticket items ive gotten through
JRH for one MAJOR reason.
In 10 years they will still be selling preparedness items,,which means when i need help, parts or info on new/better products i can contact them or even in person at the many survivalist get togethers ( yes ive seen JRH let people finger bang, stomp, and abuse items to prove how good they were BEFORE buying the item sight un seen at those events) . i also dont have to look at a box just say " PREP stuff inside purchased from blow my OPSEC.com " on the side ..nor do my neighbors.......
I doubt many of the new " hey look at all my amazon links on my blog" prep stores that have grown like shrooms on a pile of cow dung the last 4 years ....will be...nor will they have the trust and customer realtionship that JRH has with the survivalist community in the future.....Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!
