all you do is clean them. The ceradyns can be scrubbed with a 3 m pad( green one that comes with them) and there is a supplied feeler gauge to show the wear on your filter medium. They are rated for 40K+ gallons. i would assume that is what the filter will filter before its DOA...( filter medium is to worn down to be effective)' like i said i only run 2 filters in mine. If i had a spare plug ( you can buy the parts of katadyns site) i would see no issue running only 1 filter - though it would be a slower filter rate.

according to katdyns paper work each filter has a 2-3 year service life ( water qaulity dependant)Originally posted by bixa525 View PostThanks Protus, when you say 40k is that for each filter or for all three together?
They can be scrubbed clean up to and over 100 times.
katadyn has the whole system reated at 150,000 liters( 40 k gallons) 13k gallons per filter.Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

We have a TRK drip filter that's been in daily use since 05-06. Never changed a filter.
13,000 per element is Katadyn's statement. Comes with three.
Their is a check gauge with the unit- when it fits around the filter WITHOUT FORCING IT, you have worn down the filter enough to warranty a replacement. JRH also gives you replacement elements at cost when you buy the unit from them.
No one knew what the word "Berkey" or "Berkfield" meant in the U.S. till the late 90's when Katadyn got so backed up with Y2K sales. Katadyn has always been the original.Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"
Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"
Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

well seems sawyers are popular with some because you can buy the what is it .20 kit etc and make your own drip. The problem is filter life, how well you build it etc.
I just trust the main brands and dont feel like trusting a "new" company to my lower GI's health LOLHey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

I pack a Miox purifier when I'm out and about. Water is rare here and is mostly found in stock tanks, slickrock holes and dug out of dry washes. The stock tanks have lots of silt, muck, and fairly close to a cesspool. Pump style filters don't work very well. Not that they don't clean the water, but they get clogged up easily with that kind of water. With the Miox I'll prefilter with a mesh screen into a bucket or bladder, do the treatment and let it sit. There's a formula you're supposed to use, but I just do the max each time.

yes?????????Originally posted by scoob View Posterm, okies :D
Check monolithic and storm shelter on the search bar for what i have previously posted on our larger filter systems. We have several of them and recently built one for another family on here with berky filters using buckets.
We have a variety of katadyn filters, spend the extra and get a good one from JRH. I got the paper filter one, one of those deals where that was all i had to spend in gift cards i had recieved but really wished i had waited and spent the extra money. I'm looking at getting another one, good one, at some point.
We also have Bota of Boulder water bottles for the packs as well as several types of tablets, straws and liquids.
Get the best you can afford and IMO have several because this is important. Don't skimp and make sure you have multiplesLast edited by Matt In Oklahoma; 06-25-2012, 04:46 PM.Knowledge is Power, Practiced Knowledge is Strength, Tested Knowledge is Confidence
