  • Moving long term storage

I have a question for those of you that have been storing food for many years. I used to keep all my food in the house but about 3 years ago my sister and husband were over for a holiday dinner and discovered my stash. You have to understand my sister has never met anyone she wouldn't tell everything she knows, whether you want to hear it or not. Needless to say my stuff had to go. I moved it to a climate controlled storeroom about a mile from the house and when the subject came up told my sister everything was past expiration date and was donated to a food bank. After 3 or 4 times it finally sunk in that it was gone.

The climate controlled room has gotten cost prohibitive and I must move it. I'm moving it to a non climate controled room. My real question is how much will this degrade my food storage? Moving back to the house is not an option as I'm preparing to put the house on the market so I can move to the 32 acres I have in the country.

Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance.

It depends on how its stored....type of food....and all those other variables. LD3 has stored foods in high humidity and high temps (He has mentioned MRE's and they were above the recommended temps per the MRE Chart nazi's are were still good). I probably wouldn't sweat about this too much...hopefully the house will sell and you will be out to the country in a few months and you can set up your LTS storage bunker or whatever you have planned.

The big factor is the packaging that you used and if there is an airtight seal IMO, I think that is what LD3 & Protus have been preaching on here.

Thanks elittle. Everything is packaged in mylar and buckets or #10 cans. Guess I'm just nervous about the heat and humidity of the gulf coast. Hopefully by the heat of the summer I'll have a storage room/barn on the property and won't have to worry.
