  • Happy With Big Purchase Today

Today bought 160 cans (5 ounce) of Bumble Bee Tuna on sale at Safeway for 70 cents a can. Expiration date is April 2015, and our cool storage room should extend that a bit. My family won't have any trouble rotating through that much (and more) in three years. I'm happy with the buy, although that blows the prep budget for this paycheck. Where I live, we usually only see off brands of tuna, or early expiration dates, on sale for that low price.

I like the sense of security from a well-stocked pantry. I try to buy only sale items, and canned tuna is one of the best prep foods for us.

Congratulations on the score. We used to eat alot more tuna than we do now, but a couple years ago my wife started developing a twitch in her face if she ate too much tuna. Mercury??? We still eat it, just in more moderation. Gives you a good feeling when the pantry is full.

Thanks. I have worried about that too - and the dolphin safe issue. That's why I stick to the bigger name brands of tuna, hoping that their product presents less risk of problems. I have no idea if my hope is justified, but the Bumble Bee web site at least makes encouraging claims.

Don't know that you can get completely away from the mercury problem and still eat fish. Most of the rivers and lakes in E. Texas have fish consumption advisories for mercury. Have read it's from the acid rain (a byproduct of coal fired plants of which we have an abundance). That being said my understanding is the amount of mercury in the water would have to be 100 times greater to be dangerous.

Good for you. Any time you find a bargain these days go for it. Vegetables are going sky high right now. A year ago corn on sale was four cans for two dollars. Today the same package on sale is three dollars. GB

            Well done! 160 x $.70 = $112.00 ; added confidence and security, priceless!
