  • Washing Machine Water

If you knew that something was coming say a storm or things are deteriorating rapidly in an area I often store prefilled water in the tub and sinks as i'm sure alot of you do as well. I thought about the washing machine this morning and have asked myself why i didnt do it before. I hold a little over 17gls in the tank on my particular model. If I leave the machine lid up or unplug it the water stays in the tank and it's a bit of a pain but I can dip the water out into another larger container like a jug and if nothing else i have flush water for the toilet for several times. It's still easier than pulling from the well or even going outside in bad conditions. dunno, just a thought

I pulled the fabric softner piece from the center piece of the machine to make access easier for dipping the water out. 17gls is 17gls even if you dont want to filter it for drinking

Great idea. Flushing water is a premium, and a few gallons would be a great way to save other water for drinking. Of course if you are using a Berky to filter, then this would be a good bit of extra drinking water as well.
I know that there are a lot of folks that have suggested the water stored in the home hot water tank, but this is the first time I have ever seen someone suggest this as an extra source. Well done there Matt. Two thumbs up for sure.

Now that is thinking outside the box, Matt! It is such a simple idea but one that I've never thought about, nor have I ever heard anyone else mention it.

      Many thanks!!

Thanks for the idea. Am always looking for ways to practically think outside the box and this certainly qualifies. Thanks for sharing the tip!

If you are considering doing this, you might want to run a cleaning cycle. I know when I began washing cloth diapers, I ran my machine through several cycles of just very hot water and it was amazing the soap that had accumulated inside the machine. Or just reserve the water for non-drinking uses.

You are absolutly correct. I have plenty of drinking water so its toilet flush or I have filters too!

If you add a bit of white vinegar to the rinse cycle it will cut that soap scum and drain it away from the clothes and the washer. Of course, if you use a fabric softener, forget it.
