  • out of date food pastry

i thought i'd posted something similar and couldn't find it...
    anyhow.

while moving this summer - the bride found some "older food" items in our pantry.
tonight we ate some LU petit little pastries..
she'd bought these at a deep discount
they are marked best by october 2009. they've been stored inside our home before and after the move.
the individual apricot filled pastries are wrapped in a metallic type wrapper
    and still tasted good.

Another argument for the theory that the manufacturers put these dates on so we throw out our stuff sooner than we need to and go buy more!!

One thing you need to consider when looking at food is some foods lose their nutritional value after long term storage or in heat. MREs are a prime example. If you store an MRE in the trunk of your car in the Summer time by the end of 30 days it will have no nutritional value at all. It still may taste good but has the same food value as the wrapper it came in. If you store food in a very cool environment or even a refrigerator the life of the food is greatly lengthened. The best eat by dates are also a way of covering the manufacturers behind. They will go longer. It is also a great way to get bargains at times. If a food package is near it best by date the price should be reduced. WE have stored canned meat products that do not require being in refrigeration but we keep them there in a spare unit just to extend the life of the products. GB
