  • Storing apples

    Apples are usually on sale this time of year here in Michigan. Like to buy Galas and Honeycrisp (good eaters and they keep well) wrap each individually in a sheet of newspaper and store in a basket (I use clothes baskets). Should one rot the paper contains it. Read where apples store best at 32 degrees. I put them in the garage (it's not heated but insulated) and they will keep into Mar. or so.

    really, that cold? I would suppose freezing them and keeping them frozen would work, until they all started to thaw at the same time, but I'd think repeated thawing and re-freezing would be a bad idea. Your insulated garage, if adjacent to the house, maybe never freezes -- I'd guess temps in the 40s/50s would be more ideal.

    mind you, I am not an expert, but i am putting in an espalier orchard right now and did do some research on storage lives of different cultivars.

    Honeycrisp are delicious, I agree!

      here's how we store our apples, we've lost too many trying other waye

        we kept apples in root cellar just above 32 until may. Ditto carrots (although they got 'hairy') and spuds

          Crossbow, that's a pretty sight! It's got to give everyone a good feeling (sense of accomplishment) when you look at all those jars on the shelf; good job!

            Do you have a good recipe you would mine sharing to prepare those beauties? Also what has been the best way to use them? Oh and are those "(sweet)Golden Delicious" or ?(tart)Granny Smith"?
            I have been doing some canning during the summer, but I need to do fruits as well.

            Oh and Claymore, it stays to warm for much of the winter here. But I do have a second fridge in the garage I could keep some fresh ones. I just may try that. Any suggestions on the best variety for storage?

              we use Golden Delicious and Mutsu and we use the same recipe that is in the Ball Blue book, we can 70-90 jars of apples and make maybe 25 pints of apple butter and 60-80 qts of apple sauce, we're still eating some from 2009

                Thanks for the reply. Although we don't have any apple trees on our property, we do have many "pick your own" farms close by. This will still be cheaper then buying from the store.

                  Not sure about a fridge or about the local varieties. I just caught a sale and bought a bushell.

                    we just made 3 doz quarts of apple sauce, and ran two dehydrator loads of apples w/ cinnamon and sugar. that should last us until next season. I've never had much luck with the varieties that we grow storing well.

                        Back in the dark ages when I was a boy apples many times came packed in a cardboard box with fiber trays similar in concept to an egg carton. When stored this way in a cold environment 40-50 degrees they kept really well.

                          This is still how quality apples are shipped to your local grocery. No not the crappy apples that are sold in the 5lb bags, usually the good quality red delicious are packed like you stated. :)

                            Apples and spuds do not store well togather in the same room. They will each last longer if stored in diffrent areas.

                              Because apples release ethylene gas, BTW you can use this to ripen a green banana overnight :)
