Big Berkey ro Katydin filter

so I got the katy with an extra filter, I was told by the shipper to make sure I inspected all the ceramic filters when it arrives as they have a tendancy to shatter when dropped. so now I will work on getting mucho spare filters. I also need to get the plugs for the filter holes, they are expensive fgrom katy, any ideas?

Glad I found this thread, I have been looking at both for a while and am planning on purchasing one very soon. I too thought Berkey was the way to go, but liked the price of the Katy, I love their hiker pro, and Katydin has been around and reputal for as long as I can remember. So it looks like the "Big Katy" is the way to go.

Do you all ever wipe the plastic out with bleach or is it not necessary?

I've never used bleach in any of ours, definitely not on the filters.

Even when green gunky water has been used, the TRK drip has cleaned up easily.

sounds like who ever you bought it from wants to make more money off you verse trying to help you get the best product for your scenerio.

Wow, interesting thread on the problems with the Berkeys. As I have read many times on this board, "test your preps before you need them." I purchased my Berkey over 5 years ago with the white candles but have never tested it. I will be pulling it out this week to begin using it. With that said, I am very happy that I took advantage of the JRH sale and ordered a Catadyn. When it arrives I will not make the same mistake of just tucking it away for when I need it, I will be testing it as well.
