More bad news for food prices.

    It's the basics that have gone up in price in the past year. Bread, milk, butter, sugar, flour. When bread rose to $2.99 a loaf, my jaw dropped. I've never kept track of grocery prices before, now I look for the increases. I usually buy the same things every week, and the total at the check gives me sticker shock. Things are only going to get worse, especially with the weather issues.

      MB, what type of bread do you buy and where? We buy the target or publix brand white or wheat and its never more than $1.50. Sometimes we splurge and get that "fancy" stuff that costs over $2.00. More reason why we are wanting to get a grain mill and start making our own bread next year. With 2 growing boys they will eat so many sandwiches (as did I as a kid) that they will turn into one!

        Publix Sunbeam King size white bread. It is $2.99 a loaf. If I buy the same bread at sams its 2 for $5.00. 2 loaves will spoil before it's eaten.

          I know thats right, I have been freezing a loaf whenever we get two. But with my 4 year old really into grilled cheeses we can devour a loaf in 3 days....:)

            mama monkeybird- I also freeze my loafs from Sam's and they keep very well. Granted, I have to thaw them out, but I just toast them a little extra. :)

              Something you might try is cinnamon. Sprinkle a little on top of the loaf, and they won't develop mold. It's an incredible anti-fungal. It won't affect the taste that much, (improves it, imho) and it won't hurt you. I read somewhere that during the flu of 1918, the only people who didn't get sick were people working in a cinnamon processing plant in New York. I have been using it liberally on my oatmeal in the morning and haven't had the early winter cold yet. I'm going to keep using it. Like I said, I like the flavor anyway.

                My second favorite breakfast (Grandma called it a Farmer's Breakfast) cooked rice, then pour in some raisins, cover the pot for above 5 minutes to let the raisin and rice finish cooking/absorbing some water, take out a spoonful and put it in a bowl, pour in some "FRESH" cow's milk, sprinkle some cinnamon on top and BAM!!!! My second favorite breakfast in the world!!

                  that was one of our main foods for dinner in the 40s except we put a little honey or brown sugar on it when we had it.
