  • Packed my first batch of mylar bags

I packed 20 one gallon mylar bags yesterday with beans and rice - Thanks to delta69alpha for the vid that got me started (Vid Here)- I wish I had a nice sealer but I did it with the iron technique

I knew the flaw in my method would be the seals - right now I only have 2 bags that didn't suck in out of twenty - not bad

I think I might feel comfortable enough to move up to the 5 gallon bags

I wish the sealers didn't cost so much

PackoInc.com has an impulse sealer line MP-4, MP-8, MP-12. I sent the company a couple of mylar bags to test with and it worked. They tested with the MP-12, the number equals the length of the seal. The seal width is 1/16" you could make a couple of seals across the bag to make sure you got it sealed.

    The MP-4 = $44
MP-8 = $64 --this is the one i was looking at getting
    MP-12 = $85

The same company has the 6" hand sealer like the one that is used in the PAW vids for $82.

Did you use a metal level to help make the seal with the Iron?

    Congratulations!! Keep it up.

I forgot to get one when I was at lowes - I used a cutting board and a metal framing square that I had

I will check out that site - thanks

Congrats! Remember also if they don't suck down like a brick of coffee it's not the end of the world. A good seal is all that's really necessary. If you push on the sealed bag and air comes out, the seal isn't satisfactory. If you push on the sealed bag and it's got a little remaining air but the air doesn't leave the bag, that's fine too.

We ought to strive for the sucked down like a brick of coffee look, but if we don't get that 100% of the time yet have a good seal, that will be fine. That comes from long term experience in opening and eating more than a few buckets like that.
