I'm a firm believer in buy once cry once when it comes to certain things. I'd much rather spend a little extra coin on quality goods than save a little over something that won't last. Just some brands I'm a firm believer in: Stihl, Husqavarna, Tactical Tailor, Raine, Primus, Motorola, Patagonia, Bates, Belleville, Leatherman, Columbia River Knives, Fiskars, 5.11, Pelican, Surefire, Maxpedition...the list could go on. These brands have worked well for me in the past and many are still going strong.
But one of the things that lives vividly in my mind I wasted money on was one of those shaker lights. You know? The battery-less ones you see in the "survival" areas of some camping goods stores. Yeah, bought one thinking "way cool to put in a survival pack." Works great as an arm workout since you have to shake the darn thing every fifteen seconds. And the light? Might read a newspaper (for the aforementioned fifteen seconds) with it.
Certainly not something I should have spent money on. I wisely now pack a flashlight and spare batteries.
