My folks came over Sat night and found out that my Step Dad has some old cast iron skillets in the basement....he said "if I'd known you were looking for one I would have given you one"....oh well....I told him if he doesn't want them I will take them. No I just need to find a dutch oven."It's a trap!!!!" -- Admiral Ackbar

While sitting in a waiting room today I picked up the August 2011 Sunset magazine and they had a few dutch oven recipes that looked pretty good. You can find them here: http://www.sunset.com/food-wine/easy...0418000067516/
Enjoy!

Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10

We've been cooking with nothing but cast iron for a couple years now. All together I think we have 11 or 12 pieces, including 2 dutch ovens.
I still buy cast at auctions if it's a good brand. Since we have so much now I try to buy only Griswold and Wagner, though I will pick up others if it's only a $1 or 2

I try to find old cast iron that has been used alot. Don't care if its rusty as i can clean that up, what i hate is that if you buy new it has this pebbling all over. The older stuff had a slick smooth bottom like the skillets i got from my mother. I bought a Lodge griddle from Academy and it was useless from the get go even though it was "preseasoned". I took a 4" flapper sanding disc to it and smoothed/slicked out the cooking surface, gave it a good washing, then seasoned it. Eggs slide around on it now while cooking. Had to do this to the dutch oven i bought also. Haven't had any issues whether it was from china or elsewhere so far.

Another thing to look for is the Trivits,Lid lifters/oven turner/ lid holders and stands. Im in my mid 40s now and bending over a cook hole or oven all aftrernoon gets to me now. I bought a stand for the ovens and have been very pleased with it. I have had up to 6 ovens stacked on the stand at once.
A few other nice to haves are welders gloves, charcoal chimney, and long tongs for coal/wood placement. I have used other tools for these in the begining but its nice to have a correct tool for the job. I have used vice grips and plyers for lid lifters and towels for oven turning etc.
The lid stand has two good functions. one is intended purpose, a clean place to rest the lid while checking whats in the oven. second as a stand for an inverted lid over coals/wood to use the lid as a fry pan/toaster/warmer/etc.

Barfife,
Here a few links to those items, still have not got a chance to take pictures of my stuff yet. Raining cats and dogs here, and they are all out in the shed.
The lid holder is hinged so it can fold up.
If you scroll down the link you will see the Trivet, and lid/oven turner, I will also post links.
As soon as I can I will post up pictures.

This was at Knob creek 2007, just a quick sample of my cast iron i had on my PC.
ETA..
The tongs are to place the coals from the charcoal chimney to the lids, or under ovens. I am just starting dinner here. The lid/oven lifter is hanging off the stand on leftish front.Last edited by RobertJ; 10-09-2011, 02:42 PM.

I have always stuck with the Lodge brand name. My Dutch Ovens are a long term investment. Now some new companys are comeing onthe market with larger sizes. Iam willingto try one of these ovens to see how they conpare. I willnot use a oven from China or India for cooking. They do make great targets for long range target practice.
