  • Question for the Berkey guy

I have several of the sport filter bottles that my wife and I keep in our cars. I read in the direstion where it is reccommended that the filters not be allowed to freeze.
My question is, is that with water in them only or not to store them at all in freezing temps?

water expands when frozen....like other filters it more than likely damages the filter unit, making it not 100% in its capabilities to filter as advertised.

Perhaps I did not explain properly. Do I have to protect the filter from freezing temps even when it is dry?

Not overly familiar with Berkfields, heck no one was till the late 90's when Katadyn got backed up due to Y2K sales but I assume it's modeled after the Katadyn TRK Drip filter. ANY ceramic filter will be needed to be protected from freezing when WET. When dry I don't see why it would need to be protected. We have dozens of ceramic TRK elements in a storage area that freezes in the winter and in 15 years of having them have never had a problem with them.

They can be stored in freezing temps, as long as they do not have water in them. I would also keep them covered to keep them warm when it gets really cold also.

I apologize that i did not answer this for 3 months, as i had not visited this forum in that time.

I edited out the advertising link. We have had way too much stupid crap lately with spammers and folks looking for free advertising. 1Admin
