o2 Absorber Question

I finally had my first "bucket and baggin" session Thursday night....figured out that putting the leftover o2's in a small mason jar, the top popped in less than 5 mins...

My question is, now that everything is packed and the bags are sealed, how long does it take before the bags aren't "flimsy" anymore? I thought the absorber was going to suck most of the air out and make the bag seem "tighter".

Don't know man, both got to wait for an answer. Were O2 absorbers packed with one of those pink tablets ? Seems like after a couple days it would have done its thing by now.

No pink tab....I thought they "tightened" up a bit.....

When I do my bags....I heat seal the whole top minus about 3 inches....I then grab my shopvac and place the smallest attachment in the hole and suck all the air out of the bag....I then quickly seal the remainder 3 inchs.........

I've had some bags really shrink up, while others seemed like they still had some air in them. And this was with O2 sorbers from the same batch, all bagged at the same time. The difference I found, seemed to be what was in the bag! For example, my rice bags really shrank up, while the oats bags and macaroni bags didn't as much.

Also, I read this somewhere else on the web.... O2 absorbers absorb the oxygen from the bag, there's still the "other parts" of air in the bag - mainly nitrogen, a little carbon dioxide, and other stuff. (In my house, 30% of the air is methane, from my teenage son, who still thinks farting is something he can earn a merit badge for...)

didnt you know that farting will someday be a Olympic sport.....(I feel your pain..I have 3 teens...1 girl...2 boys....and the sad thing is...the girl can out fart the boys.......

Never thought of that; good idea ! You know I guess like rice would replace more O2 then say oatmeal (oats would trap more air?).

On denser products you can just purge the last of the air out by pushing with your hands.

Sometimes you will have sealed mylars that look like a brick of coffee (really tight, "taoot like a tiger!") and others aren't.

If you used oxgyen absorbers that didn't sit around OPEN for a while and sealed your bags correctly, no worries whatsoever if the bag doesn't suck down tight.

Agreed, "vacuum-packed" is not the norm with O2's... It absorbs oxygen, not all gases...
