Survival Reference Guide?

Dare to Prepare is comprehensive and rather urban oriented. It covers most prep areas, not just food, and the latest tech stuff is in there too. It is excellent though, lots of charts and checklists for those who like them. Available on internet from standeyo or on amazon. very up to date, and includes bioterrorism info. Making the Best of Basics is recipe heavy, but likewise excellent. Best of all it can be had used from Amazon quite cheaply.
Those are the two I give to those who are curious about preparations. I keep multiple copies for loan out to good friends (that i can trust to return them!) and for gifts. :cool:

those are the two that i loan to my curious relatives and friends. they are available cheap 2nd hand, so i have multiple copies. 'dare to prepare' has oodles of neat charts and checklists for those who like them.

I love the FOX FIRE series (11 books in all and very expensive even at used book stores). the other option I really love is from JRH and I don't know if he still has them but several years ago they produced a series of SURVIVAL REPORTS 1 2 and 3 I have on my desk. I recall these came from the old Shortwave days and time in Florida. they are excellent if you can still get them.

I'm reasearching foxfire in firefox. O.o

Anywho, does anyone know if FoxFire has had the copyright restrictions lifted yet? I know nothing about the timeframe of these things, but I know it's an ancient series. If it's legal, I'll post copies of it on my host.

I too have managed to mirror the site. Seems he got hammered to the point of having to shut down there for a little while. :/ If anyone has any interest, I can post everything from his site (plus a few tidbits of my own that I've been collecting) onto my own host.

Totally agreed. A great uncle of mine gave me the first 6 (which in my opinion are the best of the series) when I was just a kid. I've nearly memorized them cover to cover. I still have them on my shelf.

The foxfire series of books is awesome....lots on info on how mountain folk live and what they do to build stuff, tell changes of season, canning, drying meat etc. Found them at half price books for like 2 bucks each...wealth of knowledge....the country living encyclopedias are awesome also...where there is no doctor or dentist are great books....you can find a lot of old military manuals at gun shows...if you go online and google expired copyright books you can find a ton of books that the copyrights have expired and download them for free, technical manuals, food preps etc..have a good size flash drive handy...the Nato war surgery manual is also a great book to have...theres so many good books its hard to have them all..I guess find out what you are looking for and then settle on a core set of books for reference..good luck!

There is no one book out there however if someone was to write it and make it affordable you would be a rich person but boy that would be one big book.

About the best for homesteading skills would be Carla Emery's Encyclopedia Of Country Living, early editions. For technical stuff you might find a 4 volume set of How Things Work tucked away in a used book store somewhere. For medical stuff Where There Is No Doctor and Where There Is No Dentist are good basics.

I second the motion on Carla Emery's Encyclopedia of Country Living I purchased it first in early 80's and have one on hand ever since.

For medical info I highly recommend Wilderness Medicine Beyond First Aid. Just the right amount of info one might need
