  • Food Allergies: What to do for food storage?

    Hiya All!

As I mentioned in my "I am back" thread I have developed severe food allergies at the ripe old age of 47. Yikes! I am not allergic to peanuts, peas, soy, corn, with an intolerance to legumes due to the relationship with peanuts and soy. I have always planned around my kids' food allergies, but now I have to rethink much of what I have done.

Anyway, if you have any suggestions, I am open to anything.

    Thanks,
    SC

I do have lots of rice stored and am planning on adding some dehyrated meats to my storage plan. I also have quite a bit of canned meats, so my current plan is not a total loss. It just requires some retooling to ensure good nutrition for all of us.

      Thanks,
      SC

Maybe you trade your now unusable stored stuff with someone for stuff you can use or use it for barter material PAW

Trade or barter is a great idea. Like I said in your intro. maybe you can do your own canning (at least you'll know the ingredients). Good deal on the store canned goods. Guy I knew at work has a son whose deathly alergic to peanuts, other thing too; really got to watch ingredients closely>

Yes, I agree on the bartering. My plan was to keep all of the beans that I have and use them for barter as needed.

Canning is a great idea, thanks Claymore. I really have not got into canning, although I used to help my mom as a kid. I guess it is time to ask my mom to come and help me get started again with canning.

Something else I have been interested in is dehydrating foods using an Excaliber. I have saved in my favorites a link to a lady who dehydrates everything and then puts her own dehydrated meals together for LTS, i.e., stews, soups, etc. In fact, I may have found the link through this site. I love the idea of having my own dehyrated meals ready to go in a pinch. Especially stuff that we have already tried and know that we like.

            Thanks for the ideas.

I have allergies to beef and milk products,I have had to learn to read and decode the ingredent lists on products, I cannot buy almost any of the LTS foods cept fer the freeze dried, most of the rest have some form of a milk product in them or MSG. So as others have said you will have to tailor your food larder to suit your own needs..

Keep plenty of benedryl on hand. Also, talk to your doctor about a EPI-Pen.

Food allergies can turn deadly, just like any allergic reaction, you just don't know when.

Thanks for the replies ssonb and archangel911.

Does anyone know if benedryl is still usable after the expiration date? We have lots of EPI-Pens on hand, and I have read that they are usable past the expiration date as long as the liquid is still clear, hopefully that is correct.

Diphenhydramine is the drug you are looking for, Benadryl is the brand name. Generic Diphenhydramine is dirt cheap. I would just make sure to buy new regularly. (Keeping the outdated for less urgent situations, like seasonal type allergies, or as a sleep aid). I bought a box of 400 from Sam's several months back. It expires on 12/13 and was less than $10.

Thanks for the tip MG, I really appreciate it. I will pick up a case and just rotate it as you suggested.
