  • Feed Wheat is cheap IMO

Ok so I stopped by the grain elevator and got me a 50 lb bag of feed wheat for $6.75...dang cheap IMO. I scooped up a jar full and set it aside so I can do a vid later the rest is packed up into 2 5 gal mylar bags inside my bucket w/ a 2000 cc O2 absorber. I used the Iron and Metal Level method for sealing the bag....thanks PAW Productions.

I will do a vid showing what this wheat looks like as well as a product review of my cast iron grain mill. So keep an eye out in the Members section for my upcoming video.

The one question that I really had was what do you use to screen out all the chaff from feed wheat before you go and grind it?

    thanks,
    elittle

A good breeze worked good in that video. A cheap window fan works well also.

If you feel the need to winnow it, I'd consider doing it before putting it up for storage.

No bugs buying it this late in the summer up there? We pretty much have to stop buying it here around March or it will be buggy already.

BTW, it grows well also- vid is proof of that. :)

I didn't see any bugs....doesn't mean they weren't there. I opened the bag and didn't see anything crawling around sooo who knows. I'll check that jar of wheat later to see if there is anything crawling around.

@MB thanks for the vid link!! I will definitely watch it.

Seems simple enough to get the chaff out....thanks for the vid. I will probably just winnow out the chaff as I use these 2 buckets. I will have to do it in the garage with the door closed and a fan cause I live in town. OPSEC and all.

Oh the people at the grain elevator didn't even bat an eye when I placed my order. They asked what I needed, I told them, they said ok be right back. 13.5 cents per pound is dang cheap.

Hopefully I won't be too tired to do a vid tonight...had a support call last night around midnight and had trouble getting back to sleep so I am a little tired today.

I just bought a 25 Lb bag at Walmart for $13.98, so you did get a good deal! (Of course mine was inspected by a professional, trained, Walmart inspector.....) :)

At least your China mart sells wheat mine don't must be because we have so many grain elevators that sell feed wheat...who knows :)

You basically paid for the extra cleaning your wheat got.

My China mart doesn't carry it and I doubt if there's a grain elevator within 500 miles of here. I was thinking that it was a matter of shipping costs.
What a long, strange trip it's been.....

Just remember the wheat from the feed store still has the husk on it as opposed to the wheat berries sold in food stores. The husk adds no nutrition and adds usually a bit too much fiber in the end food product which is papery and yucky. Wheat berries are the kernel of the wheat you grind to make flour. Feed wheat IS usable but you will get a different product that you were expecting.
