  • Two LTS questions for the board....

Wife came from China Mart today and brought me a 5 gallon bucket with the lid. I have never done any LTS in 5 gallon buckets and want to know if the Wally World buckets and lids are OK..

Next question, where is the best place to order say, 5-10 1 gallon mylar bags and how many or what kind of o2 absorbers would I need to get...dont really care to stock up on em now (funds) but I want to be able to fill this bucket with all of my rice, salt and brown sugar....and I think 5-10 bags would suffice....

    Thanks folks

Buckets is buckets, the lids however if like my wallieworld do not have gaskets. I have thought about using caulk to make my own gasket if I HAD to.
Think LD3 said Frugals at the bottom of the page sells that stuff.
Brown sugar, hmmmm, brown sugar hadnt thought of that, hmm

A little brown sugar with rice would go a long way towards food burnout after time for sure.

Glad to know I aint the only cheap one. I save all restraunt and hotel sugar, salt, peper, red pepper and parmesian cheese packets and bag them and toss them in the top of buckets.
Tea, i dont like tea but how long does that stuff last? Might be others that like it

Dont know, I would like to know the shelf life though.....I drink green tea throughout the year with a squirt of honey and a pinch of cinnamon. It keeps me from getting sick (mind over matter I guess)...oh yeah, I keep all that stuff too....hell, I keep some cayenne pepper in my first aid kit...yeah man, I am as cheap as it gets on stuff like that...plastic silverware and straws too....stuff comes in handy sometimes...pre PAW

I went to amazon.com and 50 1gal. bags and 50 300 cc O2 absorbers for $22.75 ! Also I've got stuff (brn. sugar, baking powder, soda, salt in pint and quart canning jars; lids just screwed tight . Vacuum bagged tea bags before. Going to put up coffee in the mylar (when I get them) . This will be my first experience with mylar.

I get my mylar bags from mkrose77 (http://myworld.ebay.com/mkrose77/) on ebay, I used their 1 gal bags and 300 cc O2 absorbers in my video for making my buckets, see the members forum. From what I have seen in the PAW production vids is they use a 2000 cc O2 absorber in a 5 gal mylar bag. I just bought some 5 gal/2000 cc from this seller (10 5-gal bags & 10 2000 cc 02 absorbers for $22.98 including the S & H).

Get your lids from Home Depot $0.98 each I emailed them and asked to make sure they came with lids or a bakery for free. Avoid buying the lids online somewhere cause the shipping will kill ya.

Brown sugar is sugar with molasses, and I've heard molasses doesn't store well ( a year ? ) Also I know plastic vacuum bags aren't a long term storage medium ( plastic will break down over time ) but if the SHTF at least the stuff is put up and we got more then we had.

Sugar is sugar. Brown, confectioners, granulated can all be store long term. Sugar should not be packed with 02, it's not necessary and just makes it harder. When opened years later it will be hard. Sugar is easy to soften with moisture.

So, store your brown sugar till you heart's content!

where I found 1 gal mylar bags

                          Hi just took a trip 2 towns away to a LDS long term storage facility. I bought 100 1 gal bags (30c a piece) and 100 300cc (I think) O2 absorbers (10c a piece).

The people were very helpful...BUT I went expecting to buy product and use their canning facilities as I have seen on YouTube and on several forums. I thought I could make pouches or #10 cans.

I was told that some government agency has shut down their canning in the facility due to the amount of dust (grain, dry milk) in the air.

SOOOOOOOO you can only purchase the large paper bags (usually 25lbs) or prepacked cans and then take home and put up in bags or cans on your own. IF your an LDS member then you can borrow or rent (?) canners to take home to use.

Monkeybird, thanks for clarifying the brown sugar question I have had in my mind for awhile. It seems to taste better to me and the cost is about the same as white, so I'm puttin' some up now.
