I have a hubby who would drive me insane without his coffee. I need help tho. I've read that ground coffee looses it's flavor very quickly. Does anyone know when I can buy coffee beans? Do I store roasted or green? Where to find a coffee grinder that's non electric? Saw one as a display at a store once, but the owner wouldn't sell for nothing. Would it be a good idea to put coffee, sugar and creamer in one bucket or keep them all separate? Thanks folks.

Green Vs Roasted
Green coffee beans will last longer than roasted ones. But then you must roast them yourself because that's how they get there flavor. By roasting your own you can get them to taste how you like, without roasting your coffee will be bitter and very acidic. You can find plenty of vintage hand grinders on Ebay for around 20 dollars. However finding a non electric coffee roaster won't be quite as easy. I know they sell one on Amazon under a brand called Hario but it costs 300 dollars! I believe you could make the Hario version very easy or you could roast them in a popcorn popper though(Wabash valley farms whirley pop popcorn popper). The beans just have to be constantly moving so they are roasted evenly and not burned.
Here's directions on how to roast them.
1: Heat the roaster on the stovetop to a medium setting. Add up to 8 oz. of green coffee beans and close the lid and begin turning the crank (or stirring) constantly.
2: Continue stirring. Beans must be stirred constantly for an even roast. In 4- 8 minutes the beans will start to make crack. Now coffee will start to smell smoke will start to appear. If you have a fan hood, turn it on now, or open the window.
3: About a minute after the first crack check the beans color. Keep checking till you get them the way you like.
4: Once the beans are roasted to your liking, remove from heat and try and cool quickly. Remove the outer skin that comes off roasted coffee and disregard.
Hope that helps :)

It's past time for him to get a reality ck, I know that during WW2 many people who loved coffee went without simply because they didn't have a stamp, there was not any to be found or couldn't afford it anyway., store the coffee in vac sealed mylar inside of plastic pails or vac sealed mason jars, store the creamer and sugar the same way, but do not vac seal the sugar. PS, now is a good time to get weaned off the sugar and cream, you'll be suprised how great coffee is with either although i don't drink it at all.Originally posted by madamkitty33 View PostI have a hubby who would drive me insane without his coffee. After reading post after post on this same subject and researching the coffee on line, I came to the conclusion that freeze dried instant coffee was just about my only choice. I put the coffee in the freezer.
i haven't tried the green beans in the sealed can. But they are EXPENSIVE. Anyone tried them yet.

Well, as he is a trucker and has been for 18 years, I don't get to see him but once a week now that I'm out of work. I can't make him cut back on his coffe or cigarettes when I can't monitor his intake. WSHTF is another story. I'll be the one with the keys to the supplies- him and any others with us will find out what going cold turkey means when it come to cigarettes, coffe and beer. I am stocking up on some freeze dried coffee- but I'm not going to go out of my way to have more of it than food. I've found in my searching that every type but freeze dried is too expensive. There will not be any tobacco except for medicinal purposes, the same with liquor. All under the supervision of my key.Originally posted by monkeybird View PostAfter reading post after post on this same subject and researching the coffee on line, I came to the conclusion that freeze dried instant coffee was just about my only choice. Lehman's is a great source for non-electric appliances and such. Here is one of the non-electric coffee grinders they have: http://www.lehmans.com/store/Kitchen..._1140815?Args=
I hope this helps.
