  • At the risk of being one of "THOSE PEOPLE", I have to ask....

Very new prepper here. "One Second After" almost scared me witless!

If I am putting multiple vacuum packed items in a 5 gallon bucket, do I really need the mylar liner? I was all set to buy some (along with oxygen absorbers), and DH wanted to know why we need them IF we are already vacuum packing with oxygen absorbers and storing in a bucket. I cannot find the answer, so... at the risk of sounding like one of "those people", I am asking!

    Thanks!

There is no "one of those people" none of us knew it all nor do we now, please ask questions. The vacuum packs i am guessing are plastic? Plastic degrades where mylar doesn't.
If the vacuum packs are mylar another liner isn't needed but i have some of mine that are double done, paranoia i guess:)

Thank you. Yes, the vacuum packs are plastic. The only thing worse than having no preps at TEOTWAWKI, would be having preps you couldn't use 'cause you cut corners.

Plastic is short term, maybe 4-5yrs then the seals can come apart and the plastic degrades, i know this from having used my vauum sealer bags. The mylar last 20+ from what I am told. I use only mylar and sometimes i put smaller mylar into a large one and seal it too, but this is not nessasary, like i said paranoia i guess. LOL

As Matt said, please ask questions. None of us know it all, but I bet as a collective we know quite a bit. There are many people here to try and answer any questions you may have.

I would agree with Matt. The plastic will degrade and then the item will get moisture, and oxygen. This will lead to quicker degredation. Use mylars with O2 absorbers.

If you already have a vacuum sealer then great, however no one should buy one specifically to put up long term food storage. It's absolutely unnecessary.

As others have mentioned, the plastic will biodegrade long before the mylar ever will. Don't bother with it.

Thanks! I guess I need to order the mylar bags. What places are recommended? Any I should avoid?

Wendy Mae's Simpler living is who I've used for the last decade or so.

Her prices are good and they really are like minded people. Unlike all these folks that want to post links to these preparedness businesses wherein the people running them are just sales people that found a good niche market, I like to purchase from folks that actually SUPPORT THE MOVEMENT. I.e, give something back.

We need to support those that support us.
Wendy Mae supports and promotes the movement. That's why her and Frugal's store will get my business over others. I wish more people would think that way...

Here's Wendy Mae's store link- tell her Rob sent ya ;)

Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

                    good info here thanks folks
my two cents on this-i have stored rice in 5 gal buckets for years w/o and mylar or plastic, these are food grade buckets that i get from the cafeteria at the mill i work at rice is still good, but i am also wanting to try doing flour and other dry staples, right now they are in an old freezer hidden somewhere on the property, bukcets inside the airtight freezer seem to work fine, but have been seriously considering mylar
i like knowing who supports the movement, its good to support them, i used to be sponsered by super 8 motel, crown royal, and wrangler, was a big fan of supporting all 3.
