  • Mylar bags without the buckets??

Ok, I've just started in my food storage plan.. I got my first batch of mylar bags and ox absorbers today, and I just put up 100 lbs. of rice.
I'm using the gal. size bags so I can open 1 bag (5 lbs.) at a time, instead of a 30-40 lb pail.
My worry is that a 5 gal. bucket of rice will go stale before the wife and I use it all up. Also, as
someone here mentioned, I might be able to barter with the smaller bags if I need to.

Here's the question, is it really neccesary to use the buckets with mylar bags? The bags seem
tough enough to resist light, water and bugs... Has anyone seen a rodent chew through one?
I'm thinking a box or plastic tote would hold them easier as far as stacking them.
    Any thoughts?

Rodents can chew through mylar and even plastic buckets (not as likely but they can) or tubs if they want in bad enough.

Suggestion use quality 5 gal. buckets and pack them with 1 gal bags, but put a mix of items in each bucket so that it is a complete unit i.e. a bag of rice, beans, wheat, corn, ____ you fill in the blank.

If properly sealed (w/ O2 absorber) the rice will last anywhere from 15-30 years depending on storage conditions (temperature mainly).

    Hope that helps.

if your using rice as a main staple , 30 lbs over 30 days time between 2-4 people wont spoil. The buckets protect the bag. They are easier to move than a tote when full and stronger

I put my bags in totes. Another thing that helps is taking the steps to eliminate mice or any other pest.
