  • Monthly Storage

I would love to claim this as mine , but have to admit , I was given this advice . I was talking to a person who has been prepping a lot longer then me and he let me in a great tidbit . We are all storing food , grain , ammo , first aid and other items . Most of us are storing other home items also . There might be other ways , but this is now my way and it is super easy .
You need 5 gallon buckets , these do not need to be food grade , you put your toothpaste , shampoo , soap , tp , anything that else you think will be needed for a months use . Then you use a sharpie , mark it Jan 11 , Feb 11 , and so forth . It will make the questions , do I have enough of ' blah blah ' easy . We can look at out food supply and its easy to count . But how many bottles of shampoo are enough , bars of soap , toothpaste , tp , it is hard . The guess work is taken out now . You dont need 12 tubes of toothpaste , you can put one in every second month , but on the monthly consumables you would fill each month up with them . Then when the month comes in you can grab a bucket , open it up and unload your months supply of all the little necessities to get you through .
So make a list of what you need each month , water tablets , if using a water filter , put some every month or so in a bucket . I had everything organized in sections , I had first aid on a set of shelves , I had food on others , necessities on another , ammo - weapons in safes . So , when I need something I would go to the appropriate shelf and get my supplies , I will still use this method , but now I have 5 gallon buckets marked for each month that I stored it , so when needed , I will grab the oldest bucket and know I have the supplies to get through the month , now this is small things that make life worth living . I have also included older magazines and some help books in the buckets . I have found that I am using 2 buckets lol , so when listed I list them as A and B , A has the more critical necessities and B has the extra not so critical items .
I now can look at my supplies and know that I do have enough bottle of shampoo , aspirin , tp , toothpaste , when I started I saw boxes of these items and was like I am GTG , but after filling and few buckets , I realized I was way under prepped on these items , now I am an over achiever on some things , I might not use a full bottle of shampoo in a month , but it can be used for items , so I might use it more . But I would rather have 1/4 bottle of something left and be able to save it .
If you read this and have a more comprehensive monthly list , I would love to hear it , I have no problem reloading my buckets . I am new , so some monthly list would rock , Oh yeah womanly items are great , no more wondering if this is enough .

Wow! I can completely understand how this would be really helpful and I am not exactly a full fledged prepper but wouldn't it be nice to know that you had EVERYTHING in those buckets. I do love this idea. I don't have room to store buckets like this but I still love it. I'll keep it in mind and when I find a little room, this is what I will do for the bathroom things like shampoo, aspirin, bandades etc. Glad you posted this.

After I heard it , it was like a lightbulb went off , I was like wow it is so easy to make sure I have a months supply . I dont have to count how many cases of shampoo or toothpaste , I just count my buckets and when I have 2 years of them filled , I will wait and start rotating them as I live each month .

we do this but in 3 month increments in storage tubs... all basic necessities outside of food get thrown into the tote and stored. we do everything from pens, paper, batteries, lighters, strikers, tp, feminine products, candles, vitamins etc etc.. meds are kept in a seperate tote as are any food supplies

I like the idea of three month increments. I could probably find a place for 3 tubs and I like the idea of tubs, I was thinking that I probably couldn't store everything in a bucket that I would need.

I was organizing last night and my wife , gave me a ' duh ' moment lol . She asked me why I just put the date on the bucket . That means I spent half the night writing out a list of contents for each bucket , I was going to just sharpie them on the side , like the dates . But NO !!! hehe . She made me a little clear list , that she printed , then was taped on with packing tape . So now I know the month I filled it , I have a month supply in 2 buckets and I can see exactly whats in each bucket , buy reading the list on the side . Now I am putting this on my food buckets also . I am such a slacker .

This is not for major ticket items , this is for the small stuff you use up in a month , soaps , shampoos , vitamins , aspirin , toothpaste , womanly needs , q-tips , stuff like that . Make a list of the smaller things you use up in a month , then when you see wow , I used 2 bars of soap this month , you know you need 2 bars in a bucket . Three months is fine , just a lot harder to move around , also more clutter and once again I think it makes it harder to gauge your items . I have also made a few to give as gifts/barter as needed . When you need them , you head down to shelf , grab appropriate bucket , bring it up , open it and wallah its there , not it can be stored in a cabinet , in a corner , wherever . Then when done , you also have a useful bucket hehe .

I just lucked up on some buckets.....my cousin owns a Pizza shop and usually just throws his buckets out....not anymore!!! Mike, I love that idea and will implement it once I start getting mt LTS going full speed.
You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?

I was talking to a friend about this a while back, to help him keep his stuff organized, we talked about buying different color lids for the buckets (blue would be one thing, red would be first aid, yellow an other and so on. I guess you could do the same thing with totes.

Great idea by the way. Ours at this point are just numbered with a master list, sounds like a good project when work slows down.

@Mikeg175: we do the same thing, I got the idea from the military, I put external labels on our SKOs, never understood why half the Army still puts a 2 digit number on an SKO and expects everybody to memorize what is in what box by number. HELLO! it is not universal so what is in SKO #11 here is NOT in SKO #11 in your new unit. My opinion, Army has alot of catching up to do. At least I left all my old units doing something a little smarter, hopefully they kept it up. **shrug**
