  • where to store my food?

New here, and relatively new to prepping.

due to financial burdens that have recently been removed I can begin in earnest to prep. My living situation does not offer a basement, or really a cool dry place to store much more than can goods

My question is would it be safe to store food in 2 to 5 gallon buckets, protected in mylar bags, which would be placed in a large rubber made tote in the crawlspace of my home?

that is the coolest driest place that I have access to presently

I dont see a problem with it especially if i place some oxygen removers in the rubber tote as well, but thought i would ask and see if any had any bad experiences with long term storage in such a place

    thanx in advance

Most crawl spaces are dirt floored (that I have seen), may increase your risk of infestation? Granted the mylar blocks odor, but just the air alone from filling the mylar that ends up in the bucket could be enough to attract a REALLY hungry rat/opposum/badger...

Some people thought bears could smell through cans of canned food, but it was rather the resilient odor absorbed by the paper as the product was being packed. Undetectable by humans, but a smell fest for bears... =)

the totes will just be an extra expence and over kill long as the place is dry and they usually don't have a seal between the body and lid.

Rice, beans, sugar, and all dry foods will be just fine stored in Mylar & oxey absorbers inside plastic pails like the ones from Home depot as they have a gasket in the cover, the gray pails from Lowes don't have gaskets and are crappy, but cost the same.don't use oxey absorbers with sugar or salt. Get some 2"X2" lumber and lay them on ther ground like RR tracks to set the pails on them so air can move under them.

        thanx for the info, guys

area is dry, well ventilated and protected. I want to get as much shelf life out of what I put up, although I think we will be using long before shelf life becomes an issue.
