  • family sized water filter

I need to make a decision & order a family sized home water filter. I'm stuck between the Berkey or the Katadyn Gravidyn. Does anyone have good experiences with either of these or a different recommendation? Thanks

I bought the Big Berkey,im 110% satisfied with it..it came with 2 sets of filters, then i bought another set..im sure the Katadyn is also a good filter

No one knew what a "Berky" was in the U.S. till 1998 when Katadyn got so backed up due to Y2K sales and Berkfield got a foot hold in the U.S.

We have used a Katadyn TRK drip filter daily since 2005. The filters are wiped down once a month or so, other than that, no maintainence.

We thought that if we can come up with a single water filter to prevent a single disease, maybe we can come up with a filter that will dramatically reduce or eliminate bacteria, viruses and parasites for a much broader range.

My experience with drip filters has been different than all the posts I have seen...

I own a Aqua Rain filter system, which is just like all the other gravity drip filters...

I found that one has to also watch out for black mildew-type deposits in the unfiltered canister... I first learned this the first time I used one for any long period of time... When I went to clean it after a few weeks of operation, I noticed when I wiped down the sides of the unfiltered basin, the towel had a black residue on it. It looked to be some kind of mildew from the moisture and humidity inside the basin and lack of light.

Just a heads up... Keep an eye on mildew formation... It is a wet, moist and dark environment in there... Perfect breeding grounds...

I presently have good well water with an RO system, so the Aqua Rain with a spare set of ceramic filters is in storage for a time when conditions are not so good...

Be careful, in many cities gray water systems are illegal and could get you into trouble. One simple thing you can try is to get a long hose to attach to your clothes washing machine drain line. stretch it out into the yard and move it every load or two.

Both make good products but I purchased a Katadyn Gravidyn filter for my family. Good, simple operation and modest service requirements.

Or you could look to make your own. Here is a site: http://woodpilereport.com/html/index-page2.htm
Here are the specs for the filter: http://static.monolithic.com/pdfs/dr...FiltrSpecs.pdf
Another article on same system: http://www.monolithic.com/stories/a-...g-water-filter
                  And order site: http://shop.monolithic.com/collectio...y-preparedness

So, for less than a $100, you could have one to use plus a back-up. Or if you have the buckets, it could be less.

I built my first one today, easy as can be. I think I am going to stick these around here and there in "places".

I think they would be an awesome barter! My young adult son comes over today and I show him and much to my amazment he goes "hey we need more of those! Then he says we could put them right under the downspout gutters and have fresh water without hauling it."

                            @ Matt.
Where did you get your filter? Did you buy it locally or off line?
I am gathering the parts today to build some of these water filters.

Buckets purchased locally. I used a good gasket lid for the bottom bucket to keep the water sealed in and a cheaper but more removable top lid to put the contaminated water in. After building it and showing the son I tore it back down and stored it. I plan on doing this with a few more too and putting one in the storm shelter as well in case a tornando gets me.
