  • Homemade Laundry Soap

    Hiya All!

I am a newby here. I just discovered your forum last week. In my reading of your forum, I have not seen a thread on Homemade Laundry Soap. Since I have not seen it I wanted to post about it. I have been making my own laundry soap now for almost 3 years and love it! It is very economical and easy! Back when we were homeschooling I learned about it on one of my homeschooling forums. I decided to give it a try due to the rising cost of purchasing the larger containers at Costco. Anyway, once I tried it I have never looked back.

Here is the link to the recipe that I use:

Also, here is a recipe for a dry laundry soap version that I found on another website that I thought looked interesting, however, I have not tried it to as of yet:

1 grated bar of Fels Naptha
    2 cups of borax
    2 cups of washing soda
    2 cups of oxy-clean

Use about 3 tablespoons per load.

One last thing, for those of you who have the HE type of wash machines, I to have an HE and have no problems in using this soap.

    Cheers!

Powder uses the same quantity ingredients just omit the water and mix them all together using a food processor or blender and use 1 tbsp per wash.

That's pretty neat. I might give it a try. If it works out then maybe a good supply of the ingredients would be on my list.

I ask this question as a point of information - not to be be a smart aleck. If you have to store up all those ingredients - why not just store up the laundry soap? Does laundry detergent have a shelf life?

You can make about 300 times as much for the price of store bought.
I use just ivory and the borax and have been for years. It works great.

I apologize, I have not checked in lately. But Adoy has it right, it is cheaper to purchase the ingredients and make your own then to buy the actual name brand laundry soap. We have the HE wash machine and the Tide HE at Costco costs about $20. To make my own it only costs a few dollars at most.

Borax here costs over $4, washing soda is $5. I don't use any name brand laundry soap. I can buy laundry soap that cleans perfectly well at the Dollar Tree so I stock up on it instead of making it. I have tried making my own before but found it didn't clean even the easiest of stains (it was not the recipe posted above). I do have plans to try at least one more homemade recipe though, now that I have found the expensive washing soda. I do imagine if it ever comes right down too it that stains on our clothes will not be a great big issue for us and a bar of soap will be perfectly acceptable.
