Who Has actually Used Pool Shock Treated Water To Drink?
I have seen a million post on various sites, had 2 old friends tell me store it, talked with numerous folks who say it's part of their plan and have it but have yet to actually talk with anyone who has done it.
If you did what's the recipe? What container did you mix it in? Were there any issues? What saftey precautions need to be done? and how did it taste? What in the inert/other ingrediants?

Mine says 52 percent Calcium Hypochlorite 48 percent "other"
    Availible Chlorine 49 percent

Having had several pools, I can tell you that when used in a swimming pool, chlorine degrades with sun light rather quickly. However, in concentrated amounts it's deadly. Once, when my pool pump cavatated, I opened the chlorine dispenser and almost killed myself. The fumes literally knocked me on my bottom. The fumes burned the lining on my trachea and I coughed continually for days!

I treat pool shock and pool chlorine with very healthy respect. Is there no other treatment that would be safer?

There is but I have one of them above ground wallie world pools and have this stuff on hand anyway and soooo many are talking about it soooo I wanna know because I've yet to find anyone. Right now I'm between scared to death of messing with it (for the same reasons you outlined) to calling outright Bravo Sierra on it. I'm hoping that I'm wrong and someone can shed some light

There are alternatives, but both require electric power.

A UV water filter will kill off 99.4% of said bacteria in a tank within a hour. A 2 hour exposure to UV light and everything is killed off.
A ozone water treatment machine. (Be aware though, that while Ozone treated water is safe for humans and animals, fish cannot live in Ozone treated water due to the imbalance that is created with the molecules.)

Chlorine is nasty stuff but does the job. Turns into Phosgene gas (used in WWI) when burned which sounds a lot like what Monkeybird got into, and you should thank your lucky stars you are still alive. And remember, Chlorine sometimes can be an oxidizer, which means that near a source of combustion or soda (I have experience with this from my youth...) it will burn hot, fast and can explode. (So keep it locked up, in a airtight container, used breathing equipment when handling- w/eye wear, and keep away from flame.)

Klayton: I saw one of these systems (Aqua Pure I think) in a pool store awhile back, still have the brochure in my pile of stuff. Quick google search found this link. Hope this helps.

Tofu is correct. It also depends on your size requirements.

Also, if you can follow (USUALLY) simple diagrams you can build your own. I used the Evil Genius book series and it works fine when I need it too.

(Usually is capitolized because although I am an novice and advanced person in computers, tech and other assorted tools- some of their items require more skills than what I possess. Even though most of the time it is spelled out for you, some of the devices are incredibly tough to follow.)

sorry i find the bold funny.....just insert BOB,rifle, gear, food and it all fits LOL>

you can find pool shock that is 98% hypochlorite. but i still wanna know what the 2% is.
IMHO between a good fileter, some tablets and a few gallons of bleach, the hypochlorite can be over looked.

Seems to be a sad fact and yet so many are falling into it I'm afraid. Whats even worse is I can't get one person who has it in their plan to try it PRE SHTF.

Never tried pool shock. In the way way back, in the long long ago, I knew a teenager that was just getting started into survivalism that used to fill up small soda bottles with bleach to carry in his pack with coffee filters as part of a homemade water filtration/purification plan. After bleach leaked out and made an almost surgical looking cut through his Alice pack, he gave up on the idea...

BAKING SODA in bulk would be a must for people that are really planning on using bleach and bleach derivatives for any serious amount of water purification.
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

I know another one who has ruined some of his equipment during trial and errors too:)

I plan on getting some to make my own bleach, but not to make drinking water. There are way too many chemicals in the air & water around my area that I'd want to filter out which is something that just adding bleach can't do.
