  • Plastic Totes

I was going through what i have in inventory just this past week while on vacation. I noticed that the plastic totes i have (20 to 32 gallon) don't hold up very well we stacked.

I guess they served the main purpose which was to keep things separated and keep the mice (and rats) out. But they seemed to give way and buckle when stacked even two high.

My next trip out there i guess i will be building shelving units (probably 2X4 and plywood)

The best book shelving units i have ever made were using 5/4 board, for sides and shelving and 1/4 plywood on the back. I made 3 units (2 that are 4X7 and 1 that is stepped configuration to make area over a computer desk 7 feet tall). They have made for over ten years and 3 moves.

2 high and over 30 lbs per each one will crush them, least thats what i have found when using them for other things.

I use 24-gallon and 8-gallon Rubbermaid Action Packer Totes. Work very well, except they don't interlock when stacked. But they do stack and even if knocked over should hold the contents well.

I'll 2nd the Rubbermaid Action Packer Totes. They hold up well and even agains weather. I have a small 8 gallon one that has been in the back up my pickup truck for 9 years now with over 75+ lbs of stuff and it is still holding up great. The red lock down handles are sun faded but that is about it. They also are lockable.

The action packers are nice but they do get expensive in quantity. Tough as nails though.
