lids for long term storage

I bought 5 gallon buckets from Walmart, about $3 each. but the lids that they had where kinda sketchy looking to me. they did not have a rubber gasket and did not look real strudy. any hints on what to look for in lids.

Look at HD or Lowes. My HD had several choices for $.98 each. Plain white with no gasket, and an orange one with. Same price. If you plan to use a mylar bag sealed with an O2 absorber the seal is not an issue. The bucket will keep out mice and bugs. That said, I got a pickle bucket and lid from a hamburger joint. The lid had no gasket. It must have sealed for that use. Watch the PAW videos if you haven't yet.

The Walmart and sLowes lids are crap. Very flimsy and almost see through. You can use them if your using mylar, but you can't stack very high with those lids. I've seen them break with just one stacked on top.

If that's your only option, put a cut piece of plywood over the first layer of buckets with those lids and then stack on top of the plywood for your second stack.

With better lids we go two high, then the plywood, then two more high, then some #10 cases on top of that without a problem. However with the chinamart and sLowes lids, I'd be careful with any stacking.

But better to do SOMETHING than wait for the "best case" option IMO.

Don't buy your buckets; go to your local grocery store's bakery and ask for icing buckets; they are about 3 1/2 gallon size and have excellent lids with rubber seals. They are usually happy to get rid of them.

Look into getting a few Gamma lids. When you pop a bucket for use, you can easily get in and out of it. They are like $7 to $8 online, but worth it.

I picked up an icing bucket from the Kroger bakery yesterday. The lid did not have a gasket seal on it and it fits loosely. Very easy to knock off. Looks like it had some type of tab they pulled off to open it.
Do you try to find gasket lids for these? ( I don't think a gamma lid will work on it.) Duct tape it on? Just don't worry about the loose fit?

Definitely try to find a new lid that fits and seals. I've seen lids that lazy people just put on top of the bucket but didn't hammer down that allowed weevils into the grains inside.

In the Upper Tundra Regions- i.e, up North, the issues we have with bugs might not be a major problem, down here they are.

I saw those too. Bought one and ended up taking it back. Would not screw down on the bucket properly. (Got the bucket from Lowe's since it was food grade. Theyd didn't have any lids to fit it.) I could easily pop it off with good bump on the side with the palm of my hand. I think the one I had was defective though. I noticed after a few tries of getting it on properly that the sides were warped.

1 super wally charged me $1 per bucket w/ lid and another gave them to me for FREE. Go to the bakery and ask them if they have any icing buckets or ask them what they do with them. YMMV

I keep meaning to ask there but by the time I get around there to where the bakery is, I usually have a full basket and I forget. Too focused on getting the heck out of there. Maybe if I write it on the list...that might help.

I figure we can find some use for the bucket I did get this weekend.

No that just stinks...sorry to hear that. Try other grocery store bakeries and local restaurants :)

I haven't tried at Wall-Mart but the last two out of three times I was at Sams Club I walked out with at least 8 buckets/lids. I caught the guy at the bakery before he took them back to storage for the recycle material. The other time I got him as he was coming back from putting them away. It's basically a matter of timing there.
