  • Heater Meals

I purchased some heater meals from bass pro today. For those in the military during MRE days the heater will be familiar. The meals are good, we ate some as a family and they run about $5-6. They come with salt/peper, seasoning, napkin and spoon and the 2oz water packet to put in the heater. The run about 310-350 calories depending on the meals and have around a 2yr shelf life. Thats not very long but the meals in my bags don't last very long as I hike and hunt either. I put them in my hunting/GMHB and my BOB as well as my sons.
The only negative I have which was the same with the MREs is the heater while it gets very hot the meals don't. All in all they are not bad, easily obtained, for now anyway.
On that note I broke my "sparkie" a little while back. Apparently they don't make good door stops:mad:. Anyway we went to Academy and Bass Pro and guess what? They along with the blast match and other same type of fire starter devices seem to have gotten real popular and have left the shelves. Gee I wonder why? hmmm

Matt, I used to pick up a couple Heater Meals every now and then at the grocery but they stopped stocking them, I liked 'em. Since they quit carrying them I found a guy that has good prices on MRE's and pick up a case occasionally for my woods walking. You get a lot more food in an MRE ....... something I don't need. ;)

I have several heater meals in various bags. I forgot one in my truck last winter and even after freezing it didn't taste bad this past spring.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

Matt I bought one of those for a backpacking trip last year. It was kinda cool playing with the heater packet, but when I dug into it I was less than impressed with the quality and taste of the product. I hope your experience is better than mine.

I might not be the best one to judge meal quality because I'd eat the behind outta a skunk when I get stomach rumblings and my belly button feels like it's nawing on my backbone. The MREs do give ya more food but these were at the store someone had given me a gift card to because as they stated "I'm not buying you bullets and survival food for christmas". LOL oh well I still got'em:)

I've got a couple of the 5 cheese lasagna ones sitting with the rest of my food provisions. I don't care how they taste, only that they do the job when I need them do. You can only be so picky when you're starving.
