Yesterday I bought a few pounds of dry black beans and a 5# bag of rice ( I already have plenty of rice but figure more is better). I vacuum sealed the beans in pint canning jars. As I started transferring the rice, I saw something black. Upon closer inspection, it was rice weevils, happily crawling around in the bag. I vacuum sealed the whole bag and took it back to the store to get another brand No weevils this time!
This was my first experience with rice weevils, and I've vacuum sealed many bags of rice in pint canning jars. After having to throw out half the contents of my pantry a few years ago due to a flour weevil infestation, I'm pretty careful when I transfer foods from their original containers and I store all of my repackaged dry goods in airtight containers.
Now I'm rearranging cupboards and moving seldom-used appliance attachments to the garage to make room for dehydrated foods in vacuum-sealed canning jars, because my storage racks are FULL. The way my garden is shaping up, I'm going to be doing a lot of canning and dehydrating this fall. I may have to buy a bigger house
